I have a 2003 Coupe and want to help the beast breath. I've read that the Vortec can be a problem in wet weather. I live in So. Cal. and contrary to the rumors it does rain here. Any suggestions other than Vortec??
Thanks

There are many things you can try. Currently, I have a K&N filter and a Z06 airbox cover on mine and it allows for a bit more air to get in. Soon, I am going to change to a Blackwing intake to allow even more air to get in. Some take the airbox cover off completely and run just an open filter which is held in place with zip ties. Another option to open up your airbox cover is to just cut it open yourself.

Once you allow more air in you have to allow more air to get out too. For that I installed a corsa Indy exhaust. Nice sound at WOT but tame during normal driving.

I am sure others will chime in with what they like too.

:) Easiest up-grade for the std C-5 is to get a Z06 lid!

:D Ken Flitchner (sp?) has em for > $50.00, I think. He's listed on the Corvette Forum.

i installed the blackwing. i'm very happy with it. the install was easy and i noticed a nice little seat of the pants increase. i totally recommend it.:cool

Whats the difference between the regular lid & zo6 lid? Pictures?

Vortex Rammer.

If any one is interested, I have a complete Vortex Rammer which I have for sale. Why ? Because I have purchased a VaraRam intake system. Any offer at $100. or better will take the Vortex. Shipping is on me !

Another vote for the Blackwing from Donaldson...fairly easy install, remove and replace, and one heck of a lot more room for airflow. Check out corvettegarage.com for a good deal.:D

You really do not need to worry about the Vortec and rain unless you intentionally drive through a deep hole of water. I live in SoCal and my vette is an everyday driver. Yes it does rain in our part of the country but normal rain will not harm the engine. Its the Big Gulps that you need to worry about. I have read responses on this forum and some think if you go through water the tires will cause water to get into the intake. That is not true since the tires are behind the intake area and the shroud protects that area. Now if you drive through 7" deep water at 40 MPH, the bottom shroud will pick up buckets of water and then you are in trouble. Again, it is just personal preference but with a little caution the rammer will net you more power on those beautiful days that we have become accustomed to here in SoCal!

Lid Differences

Froggy -- The difference between LS-1 and LS-6 lids is the size of the opening. The LS-1 lid on my 2002 is only about 1-1.5 inches square. The opening in the LS-6 lid is The same height but about 5-6 time wider than the LS-1 opening.

Thanks Yellow...

Blackwing Performance

Blackwing will allow the air you need into your system and add the power you need!

I dremeled the stock airbox after removing a 2002 Z06 box. It has more integrity than no cover, but allows more air in either stock option.

Here is the difference between the 2001 C5 and 2002 Z06 covers.

Is the actual filter similar in size to the late c4's (like my 1996 LT4)?

I've seen many posts that insist that the air filter/box is NOT the restriction point on a stock exhaust - but if the factory opens it up for the z06 - well - it sure makes me wonder?

I am not familiar with the C4 box. I have read testimonials for everyone's product, but many have something to sell or just SOP results. The one that sold me was the guy showing before and after dyno runs backed up by time slips for taking the cover off only. He wasn't selling anything. Makes ya think.

I agree, if Chevy opened up the intake runners and throttle body in 2001; along with an opening in the stock lid then opened the lid more for the Z06, there must be some gain potential there. I decided cutting the stock lid was cheaper and opening the fog light surrounds gave it the cool air it needs. Really just copying the Z06.

I may cut my lid after all.
