In a previous post you said you used "header wrap" on the Powersticks to "reduce sidepipe temperature". How much wrap did it take? Did it reduce the sidepipe temp below the flesh burning range?

Thanks
Tom

Header Wrap

I got a roll from Summit and had about 10' left over. I was suprised how well it worked. With the pipes good and hot (after hard driving), you can touch the pipes w/o hearing that frying bacon sound. I don't mean you can jusy lay your hand on then and not burn, I would guess they get up to 160-180°f which is a huge improvement. John

Thanks
Exactly the information I was looking for.

This is from a tech artical from Sanderson Headers..... I hope his doesn't open a can of worms..

We get lots of questions about the thermal wrap products that are seen on various classes of competition cars. it's natural to assume that because racers use a product, it must have some performance benefit. The theory behind thermal wrap is that maintaining the combustion heat in the exhaust system improves scavenging. But on street driven cars any small advantage you might gain is offset by ugly side effects.

Racers don't mind replacing exhaust system components frequently -- you will. On street driven cars, you want to get rid of the heat. The higher the exhaust system temperature, the faster you'll burn out gaskets and destroy the headers, converters and mufflers. Unless you've got money to burn, our advice about using thermal wrap is DON'T!

don't like pain

The only reason I am using header wrap on the mufflers inside my sidepipes is too lower the temperature of the sidepipes so myself and whoever is riding with me won't experence the pain from a burn. I have had numerous friends and girlfriends with burned legs and I know how much it hurts because I have burned my legs also. John

I'm going to put some wrap on the pipes under my floorboard to help with the heat. If I have to weld in new pipe every other year, it will still be worth it to me. Plus the amount of driving I actually do in the ca, I seriously doubt it will cause problems too quickly.

I am still going to try the wrap on the Powerstick mufflers inside the sidepipes. Perhaps the exhaust will cool suffciently prior to the mufflers and not have an adverse affect on the muffler life. Lowering the sidetube temperature is a big plus.
