This may sound like a stupid question.... but I'd like to change the leather shifter knob and button to a new updated one. How the heck do you get the old one off??? Thanks in advance!!

geez guess I should have read some previous posts before posting! looks like its a snap ring at the base of the knob...now to find the right tooll to remove it....

Auto Zone has snap ring pliers with 90 degree tips on them. They make life alot easier.

shift knob removal

My '95 auto shift knob comes off by prying out the button in the top center then removing the nut underneath the decorative button. Don't know if an '85 is the same.

Try two small screwdrivers, one on each side of the push-button to pop it out of the knob, Then use a small set of snap-ring pliers to remove the snap-ring down inside of the knob, and just lift the knob off!!!!!! :D

thanks guys! I just got home from vacation (came home early because I missed the Vette....wife says I am pathetic... lol
anyway, thanks for the help! Ill be tackling the job in a cpl of weeks.
