I got this message on my DIC the other day. I read the manual and it said that the car had a problem with the steering lock? Am I about to have a biger problem with steering lock I have read so much about? I have a 2000 vert if that helps any. Any replys would be appricated.
Thanks
Bobby

I've had that display once in my '98. I thought that the steering lock problem had been fixed by 2000. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure.

You must take the car to the Dealer for a "free fix" of the steering lock system this is what causes this trouble code. GMs fix is to disconnect the locking system.

Steering Wheel lockup

I have had the same problem twice with my 2002. There is a bulletin from General Motors #01044. I was told it only covers 1998-2000. Also check GM Servoce Operations DSC851 dealing with replacement for #01044. This is a workaround procedure that involves disconnecting the battery and removing certain chips on the circuit board. This is only a stop-gap fix to get you on the road until the real problem can be researched and repaired. My mechanic (independent shop) is going through the process as we discuss it. I will let you know what he comes up with. Personally, I feel that GM is responsible.

Hi there,
There is also something else that is not usually considered.
If you loose battery power with a key in the ignition, or out, this message may sometimes occur.
This is due to a rehoming process of the locking actuator to BCM feedback.
If you had a battery voltage problem, I would suggest it is normal. If not, then I would have it professionally diagnosed.

My 97 did that too!

My 1997 Corvette did the same thing. My brother stalled it out and it said remove key and wait ten seconds. I didnt remove the or wait ten seconds and it was fine. Never had any problems with it since.
