How much will removing the heat riser increase the warm-up time?

I really need a spot to mount a thermo-switch, and the heat riser's control valve is taking one of the few mounting spots...

But it is in Maine, and I don't want it to take too long to warm up, in the winter.

joe,
the heat riser forces the r side exhaust thru the intake to preheat the air/fuel when engine temp is below 150 degrees. it has no effect on warm-up time. you might notice a stumble during warm-up if you remove the servo, assuming it even works. i doubt you will notice any difference.

Thanks. I think I'm going to have to leave it in: the spring in the actuator seems to be the only thing that holds the valve open.

But I'm pluging the vacuum lines, since I need the coolant tap to install a switch for my electric fans.

I have to keep an eye out for a spacer to replace the valve... so far, I can only find 2-1/2" dia. spacers, not the 2" that I need.

Not sure if this will help you with what your doing but here goes. When I installed my chambered exhaust system last month I cut the butterfly out of the heat riser. Then I drilled and tapped the resulting hole on one side of the heat riser with an NPT thread and put in a plug. Worked great. Perhaps you can try the same method, only use a standard thread and mount your switch there?

The switch needs to be mounted in the coolant system, not the exhaust.

But I have considered doing like you said, with an oxygen sensor in there, so I can run an air-fuel-ratio meter.

I just don't feel like pulling the exhaust, right now. Some time in the future.

I to removed the heat riser, haven't had time to remove the butterfly so I just used a screw to hold it in the open position works great.
