Now that I'm starting on the interior, need info on how to remove the seat cushions from the plastic backs, sides, etc.

New seat covers are a must, maybe even new foam- but before that happens , need to remove the old covers/foam and have the plastic painted/dyed. The seats have been removed from the car and are ready for disassembly, just need some direction here.

Is there anyone out there that has installed new seat covers themselves, that can tell me how difficult this task is? I see where there's a choice of new "leather-like" covers for under $200 but I have zero experience recovering seats.
Can anyone rate how difficult it is to recover these seats- say on a scale of 1 to 10?

Thanks for all the past help guys, hope you have a good weekend while I'm out here at work :-(
My wife and I are REALLY enjoying this site-thanx again. mike j.

One more suggestion for a project like seat cover installation, convertible top installation, rebuild processes. Get your video camera lying beside you and video each step during the removal/teardown process. If you do it step by step, it not only assists in reassembling everything properly, you will also be able to tell the locations where seat wires, clips, and similar miscellaneous parts were installed. Sometimes this can make a significant difference in a so/so versus a quality installation. Don't be afraid to give yourself verbal instructions and notes as you video the removal process.

Has proven quite handy in various reconstruct/rebuild processes for me in the past. Seems like you always think that you'll remember just how and where everything went together, but somehow never do.

My $0.02

JonM and Ron Miller- Thanks to both of you. I feel like I can tackle this job now. The link of instructions have been "saved" , and the video camera idea WILL be used. Can't thank you 2 enough.Mike J.

Mike,

Search the forums under "seat covers" there are lots of threads covering this subject. If you replace the seat covers, make sure you use new foam also. You won't be happy with new covers over old foam, but this is definitely a job you can do on your own.

I did mine with leather Not Quite Perfect covers from Corvette America for a reasonble price.

Thanks Berky,I was already leaning that way (new foam) but was hoping that I could save a few bucks by not replacing the foam too. Guess I'll wait another short time to save up enough $$ for the foam.
Problem is, if u buy foam and covers seperately it really doesn't pay to install the covers urself, for only a few more $$ u can get them already covered. So it looks like either a $200 job , or a $600 job.......
Would anyone out there have another alternative that we're missing here?

Hope my bride doesn't look at the checkbook balance anytime soon.
Thanks for all of your responses and the help. Mike J.

Hi,

Looking to recover my seats also.

Can you please expand on "Not Quite Perfect covers"?

I am looking for a quality replacement cover and was considering the Corvette America product.

Thanks.

I bought the pre-mounted seat covers. I figured if I bought the covers and took them to an upholsterer, it would cost me just as much or more than if I had bought them pre-mounted. This way I get new covers and new foam.

The seats are very easy to remove off the plastic pans. For the uppers, push on the sides with a lot of force, you will see where two wire tabs insert into slots on the plastic pan. If you push very, hard, they will slide and pop right off.

For the bottoms. Push on the front edge of the seat towards the back, and the same thing. The wire tabs will slide out of slots in the seat pan.

This took all of about 30 minutes for both seats. Sorry, I should have taken pictures. However, it was very easy to do.

I bought my seats ready assembled with new covers, foam and hardware. Made the job a snap, and the price was very reasonable. Got them from Virginia Vettes.
