I could use some tips on how to remove the starter from my corvette.
I have a 350 manual and I would like to find a way to remove the starter without having to remove the exhaust. The new starter I purchased is Powermaster Mastertorque, so I am confident that once I remove the old starter the new one should go on smoothly. Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks

As long as you have stock exhaust pipes and manifolds you ought to be able to get the starter out w/o removing any exhaust parts.

Disconnect the battery
Disconnect the starter wiring harness
Remove the clutch housing dust cover
Remove the starter bolts
Remove the starter. You may have to tip the nose of the starter down then rotate it as you take it out.

Installation is the reverse of above but you may need to shim the new starter. Starters from most reputable mfg's or rebuilders come with at least one shim and instructions on how to properly shim the starter.

Thanks Hib - I did just have a new exhaust installed and the guy that helped me out is confident that I should be able to drop the old starter out. I know that I am close, but I will try tipping the nose and rotating.
Thanks Gabe

I did not remove the clutch housing dust cover....should that give the needed clearance?

If you don't mind one other thought make sure you keep the old start lying around. The numbers matching case iron nose AC Delco starters are hard to come by and are can be rebuilt several times. Still running my original start and it has plenty of grunt.

Thanks,

Mike
