How can I get the studs out of my stock exhaust manifolds (at the manifold to y-pipe connection). After 23 years, removing the manifolds was easy...the bolts sheared like butter. Now I have to put it all back together, but I can't get the broken studs out of the manifolds! :mad

SOS. I might've gotten em out w/heat/drilling/easyout etc ... but I didn't want to risk cracking them. So I took em to a reputable automotive machine shop. With heat & drill they got the broken studs out & chased the threads ... no problem. I was having other work done at same time ... so I think I paid about $20 for the 2 manifolds.

Did you break off bolts in the head & manifold? If you broke bolts in the head Jack is right, go to a machine shop. Exhaust manifold bolts you can get out if you want. If you have a good stud, then go to home depot and get MAAP gas & PB Blaster from a auto parts store. Heat the $hit out it, they will come out. If they are flush, then drill & tap, but you MUST be in straight.

I only broke the studs that clamp the manifold to the y pipe. I didn't break all of them, but I think they should all be replaced!

Mine broke where exhaust pipe attaches ... not at head. I have gas, blaster, drills, taps etc. IMO I thought it prudent to pay someone else to risk cracking those expensive manifolds. If timing were the foremost consideration ... then I'd probably go for it myself.

PS: if you have time, shop around for studs ... some of the blister-packed stud kits' fasteners are of asian origin ... notoriously poor grade steel ... you don't wanna repeat this job. I used brass nuts on mine to prevent galling.

I replaced my studs with Stainless Steel ones.
