repainted my cowling

Did you remove the hood seal to do that? If so, did you have to break open the evap box? I was thinking of pulling my hood seal, cleaning all the gunk off, then resealing it.

Thanks

i used base coat clear coat paint yes took the hood seal of slid right out of the evap box no prodlem

Wanna do mine next? :D

What did you use to seal the crack between the hood seal and the firewall? I was thinking of using Fusor 803EZ

i havent went to the paint shop yet to see what they say

And did you pull those foam pieces that are in the corner of the cowls by the windshield? I'll be pulling mine to seal any seams that could be letting water in the car. Then will need to reglue it back in. I was wondering what to use. But I think GM might have just used weatherstrip adhesive as I pulled them up a little to see what was underneath, lots of goo. And some of it looked yellow.

yes i pulled the pads the guy at the paint shop sayed to use what ever its nothing speical weatherstrip adhesive is what it is he said i took a chunk of it up yhere to him im still not sure what im going to use yet

Ok, I say I'll just use some weatherstrip adhesive for the corner pads since I had bought a tube a while back and didn't even need to. It is the 3M black super weatherstrip adhesive. I'll probably only glue down the top part on top of the cowl.

I think it is also glued further down, but I don't see the need to as that part is held on with 2 plastic clips. And you need to pull the lower part away anyways to get to the bolt to remove the side fender.

Let me know if you did or have plans to use something on this piece to condition it. I know mine are grey and crappy looking and does have some paint overspray on it from the PO doing a crappy repaint. I might try to clean it up while it is off, but don't know what to use.

And I'm guessing you still haven't sealed up the hood seal to the firewall? Let me know what you end up using. I called 3M, but they wanted me to use some white stuff.

Oh, the reason I'm pulling those cowl corner pads, is cause there is a small crack on top of the cowl below the windshield on the passenger side. Just a little piece cracked and sticking up. I have a water leak so I'm pulling the pad so I can seal it up. I had also noticed on the driver side under the pad that the black sealant/paste stuff they used had some small cracks in it. So, I'm gonna seal all that up to make sure no water is getting in through there. I'll probably use Fusor 803EZ sealant for that since it is supposed to stick real good and is black and won't crack. I don't think I'd use that stuff for the hood seal though as it is hard to get off, ie if you needed to pull the hood seal off in the future.

the seal stuff they use on the rubber piece between the hood and firewall the guy said all that was weatherstrip adhesive so thats a 3m thing they sell at the parts has house if i use that i ll use the black that they have

Thanks. I think mine are okay. They are just grey and some have the paint overspray. I'll see if I can get that off when I remove them. I do have some of that trim die I could try on the back side to see if it makes them blacker.

I called 3M again about the sealant for the hood seal and cowl. They said to stay away from their 3M seam sealer. And recommended either their black Strip Caulk 08578 or their 3M Auto Bedding & Glazing Compound Black - 08509.

When you sealed up the hood seal, did you seal over the drain hole on the driver side? I just pulled my hood seal and noticed a little hole in the cowl on the driver side that was covered with the sealant from the factory. Though, right now, I say it had been draining since there were so many holes in the sealant.

I've got all the gunk cleaned off, and I think I'm gonna leave that hole open. I say that is there to let the water drain from the lowest point in the hood seal on the driver side. What I will probably do is right before I put the hood seal on, is run a bead of sealant to the left, below, and to the right of the hole. Bolt the hood seal on, then seal up the seam and get as close to the hole as I can. That way, the hole will be open to drain water, and I know it is sealed behind the hole so water won't get in the engine bay.

And I also think they use some kind of weatherstrip adhesive to caulk the hood seal as when pulling it, I noticed some of it looked kinda yellow. I don't think I would use weatherstrip adhesive to caulk that. It really isn't made to do that, and the factory sealant failed, so I'm sure the weatherstrip adhesive will fail to. I'd use a seam sealer. I'm using Fusor 803EZ. It is urethane and it may stick a little to well, but I don't plan on pulling the hood seal off again.

I had thought of painting it with that flexible bumper paint from Autozone, but figured with the heat, it would just flake off.
