Question: My '94 LT1 has been with a highly recommended mechanic
(not a Chevy dealership) for going on 2 weeks now. The rack & pinion
needed replacing (fluid leak). Is anyone out there familiar with this
operation? Is this a difficult task? After some second thoughts, maybe I should have taken this job to someone who specializes in steering / front ends, etc. About how long should this take? I was told at least 2 days to order & get the rack & pinion on Monday, the 3rd of last week. Told the part arrived Friday the 7th of last week, and the car would be ready this week. As of this moment, midday Thursday, I haven't heard a word from these people. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks

Anyone can order a R&P from one of the vette catalogs for $200 and have it delivered UPS in 3 days. 5 if its across a weekend...
You can also get one at the local auto parts store. O'Riellys can get me one in 3 hrs.

Labor time....4-6 hrs. If done by the book with tools and a lift, probably less. Car will need alignment afterwards. Should get new tie rods at the same time. $20 each.

Get a flatbed (wrecker) to his shop, take pics of your car (make sure he sees you snapping pics!) and tell him you need an itemized receipt.

If he tells you that you're paying for the parts too, and they're there, get HIS receipt for them. If he doesn't have HIS parts receipt for HIS parts, tell him to have a good day.

Make sure the receipt for what he's done is itemized.

Have you contacted the repair facility and asked why it is taking this amount of time? Only they will know for sure.

If you have contacted them, what was their reasoning?
