is replacing the ECM something easy to do or should a skilled mechanic do it (and if so, is it easy for them or very time consuming?) thanks

Hi Kevette,
The ECM is not a hard job except they put it in the worst place possible. Changing the prom requires a lot of care. Let me know if you need any help with it.

Kecette,
I have replaced the computer ( ECM ) in my 81 two times already and have another post on here that might have me change it again. Its very easy to do.
Just disconnect your battery first. Then remove the two electrical plugs from the computer. Now, remove the three nuts holding the computer in place and its out. Its much easier if you remove the battery too. Don't forget to remove your PROM, new computers do not come with a new PROM. I got my computer from Auto Zone for $80.00 and I also replaced my PROM. I got the PROM from NAPA and it cost me $ 43.00. Good luck.

thanks...luckily, it was not the ECM causing the problem..it was one of the vacuum hoses that needed replacing (saved a lot of time and trouble)
