Replacing Windshield

The windshield in my '77 Coupe is cracked. I went to a local auto glass shop and the installer advised that they can get the windshield, but the windshield gasket/weatherstrip would have to be replaced because the old one would basically be destroyed in the removal process. The local Chevy Dealer said the gasket is discontinued. I have looked in all my aftermarket books and can't find a complete gasket, only pillar post weatherstrip.... anyone crossed this bridge before?

There is no "gasket" or weatherstrip of any kind around the windshield; it's bonded into the opening in the windshield frame with urethane windshield adhesive, just like typical passenger cars of the era. The last Corvette that used a windshield rubber seal/gasket/weatherstrip around the windshield was 1967.

If you're talking about the short filler strips on each side between the bottom of the windshield and the rear of the fenders, Paragon has them for $25.00 per pair.

I think the pillar is for the driver and pass window weather-strip. Take it to a Corvette shop. the average windshield guys aren’t that familiar with the Corvettes. I was told that the chrome trim would usually be destroyed during the removal process.

had mine changed in my garage by a pro. no special seals (just adhesive) no damage to any trim. it cost 250. cdn and it looks great and doesn't leak.mike

Thanks to all for the info. It looks like I need to find another glass shop that knows Vettes.

Take the time to look over the frame once the glass is out. If you can schedule it have the guy take out the glass and come back another day to install. That gives you time to paint the frame or repair if needed. I use the gold wire from NAPA to remove them.
