I have a mile and one half of gravel road before I get to a blacktop highway and I'm concerned about rock chips. I think I'll try covering the bottom part of the car with clear vinyl. JC Whitney has it in 5 7/8 X 12 feet rolls. Any opinions out there or has somebody actually tried this. I had a 87 Chev pickup that had a patch in front of the rear wheel well; it seemed to work. I currently drive about 15 mph on the gravel which helps. New tires are always worse.

are there any other cars usually driving on this road. If there are not you wont get hit with any rocks. The only real way is for a rock to come off a car in front of you and hit the nose of your car. If your worried about the rear quarters then i would just invest in a good pair of splash guards. They will serve two purposes!

There is really no other traffic. The tires pick up the rocks and throw them up on the car. I have mud flaps on my other cars and running boards on the pickups to protect the paint. I don't want to spoil the looks of the Corvette by using mud flaps. Thanks for answering.

'Mud flaps' didn't help me

I put some small ones on, years ago, and they looked okay but did little or nothing to protect the lower body, so they're in a future archeological dig site.

I am about to try some plastic sheeting. What could it hurt. Not a fan of JCWhitney, due to rather mixed quality experiences though.

Okay, the film was applied to the new 745Li yesterday, by Bob Montgomery of APEC. He's been doing it for 3 years and has applied (and removed for demonstration) the stuff from his C-5. He uses patterns from X-pel, in San Antonio, which he feels are the best fitting. We had it applied to the entire front, including the headlights, plus the rear 'liftover' lip of the trunk. I'd like to wrap the whole car, expecially areas where small door digs, or stray fuel filler nozzles lurk, as a sacrificial surface.

We (he) chose a new product (there's at least 3) which is very high gloss, and which is virtually invisible on this shiny black paint. The 3M is good film, but is not as glossy (I saw it on the front of his Envoy). On certain colors and in certain areas of your car, this may not matter.

Avery makes adhesive film as does Lumar and VentureTape, which we chose. Cleartastic, I believe, is a static cling product. The adhesive types require heat and/or waxes to totally remove. The choice of tape varies on the application.

Each product has its strengths and weaknesses. Some stretch more to accomodate the complex curves of your car. One tends to separate from its adhesive when stretched too far. None will be totally undetectable as wax lines or reflections will reveal the edge, but this glossy VentureTape is very hard to see. The appication is very similar to window tinting, but exterior application typically has more complex curves, even more than the Vette rear glass.

I figure that I'd rather R&R the tape than repaint chips. The tape allows UV to pass, so the paint fades evenly. Being more porous than paint, it needs waxing as well.

Cost was $585 vs $700+ at the dealer. I appreciated Bob's honesty, skill and patience (experience), demonstrated in the application. He would have sold me a laser-cut kit for about $200 less.

Are you aware of the fact that we have as one of our community vendors, a company called Cleartastic.
Finally there's a safe and easy way to protect your paint from flying rocks and debris while driving without drilling or adhesives. Best of all, your car looks and remains totally original!
Introducing Cleartastic, an ultra clear, 8mil, flexible film that adheres to the surface via static cling. No drilling, tape, straps or glue! Cleartastic can be left on all season or removed and reused over and over again!

Give them a look-see and maybe Ed has something you can use. You might even get a deal because he's a community vendor, who knows. ;)
