61 restoration project

Hi! Studiog

Working mega hours on the 61! I am trying to have it ready for the NCRS road tour to Windsor Ont. Canada at the end of July. I have the body wet sanded and 25% buffed out. All the black out process is complete and I hope to undercoat the wheel wells this weekend. The interior components have been cleaned and repainted. I reupholstered the seats last year, but I purchased new seat foam and I hope to have the seats completed by the end of next week. The chrome is done and I will be picking it up this Friday. I just ordered the exhaust system and numerous other Items for next weeks work schedule($$$$$). I started to remove the dents and scratches from the stainless last week and hope to start installing all the trim as soon as the body is buffed out. I am having a problem installing the trunk lid and convertible deck lid. If you have had any experience with this process I could really use the advice. (Do I need to remove all the tension from the springs?)

Hey 61 I have hopefully attached 3 photos showing the springs & hinges for the trunk & deck lid on my 61. First photo shows the trunk hinge up. Second photo shows it down. To go from one to the other requires a bit of strong effort. If it is down as in second photo you will have to pull it up to attach trunk lid. As you pull past a certain point it will "jump" up on you... not too bad. I'm about 155 #s 5' 11' and I can pull it up and down without too much strain. When it goes down it also jumps down at a certain point. I recommend wearing a pair of work gloves to make the job easier and to help prevent pinched fingers. The third photo should give you an idea of the adjustment of the spring. Mine was working perfectly when I took the deck lid & trunk lid off. I have seen them with too much pressure actually almost rip a deck lid off when it was popped open. It takes alot more effort to manipulate the hinges with the trunk lid off but when it is attached and you have all that extra leverage and weight it works fine. The deck lid and the trunk lid springs and levers work together so that they won't hit each other if both are open at the same time. I would attach the trunk lid first then as you close the trunk lid down the hinges for the deck lid will rise up and you will be able to attach the deck lid. Hope this is what you needed. Good luck.
... One more thing. Be careful of that new paint!!!

Trunk and deck are on! I must have pushed the springs down while working in the trunk area. I used the leatherwork gloves as suggested and popped the hinges up. Minor adjustments tomorrow and I can start installing all the trim.

Thanks!

Glad it worked for you. I think you are on a roll. Very steady progress. I feel like a slow poke. :L
