Run Flats - Are you still using them?

Non-runflat Goodyear GS-D3's on my C5.

A little clarification for those that think the Goodyear Run Flat is the ultimate tire for the C5. This is the "best" run-flat that the engineers were able to put on the car. There was a requirement for four run-flat tires on the car so that they could meet the requirement to not put a spare tire and jack in the car. This was done to keep the weight down on the car. The reinforced sidewall on the run flat doesn't help the handling of the car at the limit. For most of the driving that's done by most of the members here the run-flat performance is good enough.

i have just put a new set of gy f1 run flats on my car. i have taken my car to the limit that i am comfortable with and these tires did just fine.

That being said, the Goodyear runflats on the C6 are a generation better and show it.

It's not actually that they are a generation better (although I am sure some small advancements have been made). Goodyear C6 runflats are perceived to be better because they are designed to run 50-100 miles at zero pressure, not the 200 miles that the OEM C5 Goodyears were designed to run at, resulting in a softer ride and less tire noise than OEM C5 Goodyears.

i have just put a new set of gy f1 run flats on my car. i have taken my car to the limit that i am comfortable with and these tires did just fine.

There's the car's limit and then there's the driver's limit... Most people on this forum don't approach the car's handling limitations.

i totally agree, i would never take the car to its limits, to many bad things can happen....

I have "Firestone Firehawks" Run Flats on mine and have no complaints. Stands to reason they will be a rougher ride but I tnink necessary without a spare, jack and etc. Just my opinion and that's what matters to me the most!

Runflats

Having just traded in a C4 on a Y2K, part of the deal was to have the dealer replace the tires. I got into a small discussion (negotiation) when he stated the tires passed PA inspection standards. The rears were 4/32" and the fronts 6/32". Considering more than half were worn off on the rear and the replacement cost for me would put me "over budget", I stood fast and was ready to walk away from the deal. The dealer bailed and I got the four new ones as part of the price. BTW, our '87 trade had just received 2 new G-Forces on the back, so I felt it was fair. I figured I saved about $1300. They go on this Friday. Should I offer to buy back the used ones? What's a fair price to pay for them? :confused

Not sure what they would be worth but surely a couple hundred bucks minimum wouldn't ya think? Did you have the dealer install run flats? And if so what brand?

Yes, the dealer will be installing them this coming Friday. I had to drive back to the dealership, a Chrysler/Jeep store, and the parts guy came out with the service manager and copied down all the info from the side wall. He said they were getting exact replacements, Goodyear Eagle F1 GS EMT's. So, what do you think? :confused

Sounds like you done alright; lot of people don't care for the run flats but wiithout a spare and etc. it's the only thing that makes since to me I would rather put up with a little noise and rougher ride than not have any options. I would sure hate to have to throw a spare tire and wheel in the back, not a lot of room to start with! Never been a big fan of fix a flat in a can either :ugh I trust the air pressure sensors are working correctly if not this would be the time to address that as well. Thanks for your reply. I never owned, or for that matter, had
even driven on run flats before. My '87 had a spare tucked underneath. I only had the C4 about 5 years and never had a flat. I had to laugh because I went just about 4 of those years and never even looked at the spare. Then one day, I pulled it down, scraped out the mud and gunk, and found it with a few pounds of air in it. Lucky, I guess!

My guess is, that come the time to buy a new set, I'll be looking a non run flats to save on the cost. My son bought a '07 new, 2 years ago June. He's about ready to get a new set of rubber, and they won't be run flats. He said he'll take the chance.

I hear you rch105 and to each their own

Just figure with taking some trips and possibly being out in the middle of no where @ night when nothing is open :ugh I will pay the difference for the added insurance. Even though there are times I would like to hear and feel the difference in a non run flat on mine! My tires are good for now and when the time comes to replace them maybe I will give this some thought but pretty sure at least for now I will stay with the run flats. If this was my daily driver I may look @ it differntly!!! No more than I drive it I can deal with it, but when the time to replace them comes maybe I will look @ it differently too
