I am new to this forum, but have already found some great info here on fixing my 1st to 4th shifting prob. on my 2001 c5 6speed. Anyway my question is: Is there another tire then the orig Goodyear F1 EMT's that someone would recomend? I'll be replacing mine this coming week. thanx

I too switch to Firestone Firehawks about 2 years ago. I wanted to stay with runflats, because I race .. I did a lot of research I settled on the Firehawks - they are an amazing tire - grip, ride, noise level all improved ... I think you'd lik them ...

:) :w :beer

I switched to Firestone too. They are quieter, ride better, and cheaper than the Goodyears.

The Firestones are much quieter and better in wet weather but they say that you can only drive on them 50 miles or so after a loss of air pressure. I guess what you gain in quieter ride you give up on lenght of driving when flat.

The previous owner of my Y2K installed Kumhos the week before I bought it last summer. THey were about $600. After about 8000 miles, no problems so far.

I prefer the Michelin Pilot Sports. They are a little more costly than some of the other run-flats, but they have a higher tread wear rating and better traction rating than most.

FWIW, ours that we just purchased balanced "perfect" with very little weight; the tire shop pro was very surprised.

Personally, I don't trust Firestone at all. That being said, many have been using them and like them. It's your car, so you decide.

I've seen a couple of posts around the fora about the runflat Firestone sidewalls splitting -- the inside of the tire -- don't know how prevalent that is.

Yokohamas seem to have been getting a lot of positive comments lately.

thanx

Thanx for all the info evryone has given.. I called a few Firestone dealers and their prices on the Firehawks are more then the GY F1's. I can get a set of GY F1's for $1200. Now I just need to fiqure out what to do.

Buy the Firestones mail order thru Tire Rack. They are less expensive than the Goodyears.

yea but

But then you still need to have them shipped, installed and balanced. And if there is a prob. with one of the tires...........what a hassle. Plus if one of them went bad then there really wouldn't be any warrenty.......at least not a quick fix one.

I would strongly suggest avoiding the Goodyear runflats and choosing either the Yokohama's..the Michelins or the Firestone runflats.

The Corvette team at general motors really ran some constraints on Goodyear that the other tire manufacturers do not have to adhere to.

One being the distance travelled with no air in the tire and then being able to reuse the runflat tire again. I believe..and don't quote me on this..that a goodyear runflat tire can go 200 miles w/no air in it at 50mph (or something like that) and the other runflat brands mentioned are designed to go 50 miles with no air without ruining the tire....

Number one..most often you will replace a runflat that you've used no matter what if you travel more than 50 miles on it with no air....or at least I would...

The reason this is important is it allows the sidewall to be more compliant for better ride and handling when the product doesnot have to go a full 200 miles..(with no air)

It is my understanding that the new Viper and even the C6/XLR will use a new system called the "PAX" system and with its unique wheel it will also be good for approximately 50 miles..with no air..

As GM was among the first to really offer runflats standard and dump the spare tire and jack..they wanted and so instructed Goodyear to create a tire of such specifications..

As they have collected data..during the past 5 years of C5 production..they have come to the conclusion..that 50 miles of running with no air and still being able to reuse the tire is more than enough and minimizes the compromise that runflat tires in general offer in terms of performance.

Me personally...I'd go with the Yokohammas as I have some friends throughout the country with the yoko runflats and they are still raving about them.

Same goes for the more costly michelins..

I think I remember posts where the width of the Firestones might appear smaller for some reason so check that out before your deciding..(not sure but I think I remember reading that somewhere..)

When considering brands of tires..and their corresponding costs..I try and look at it from a perspective of cost per mile or per year..

Whenever thats done..you make sure you buy the tire that best suits your needs..You got to live with decision for quite some time so you want the decision to be the right one.

Good luck

JB

I'm not promoting Tire Rack, but I had a problem with a Dunlop for another car I own. I didnt even have to ship it back to them. They took my word for it and sent me a new tire. Of course no tax when buying over the internet either. Anyway, from what Ive read I am going to explore Yokohamas now.
