Just got a 61 beauty and the battery died after sitting for 4 days. Replaced it and the new one died after 2 weeks. Using a 12 volt tester I removed the ground and jumped the ground back to the neg terminal with the ignition off. Got a positive indicator of current flow. Next checked the voltage regulator and got a strong positive (with the neg ground back on the battery) at the hot lead on the bottom terminal.

Two batteries have tested dead after having been in the car for less than three weeks each. One cell appears to be creamed. Charging system checks OK at a local garage with a tester.

Soooo, I believe I have a bad voltage requlator (possibly stuck points) and want to replace it but a buddy advises to get a solid state regulator rather than the old style points regulator.

Am I on the right track?? Advice and comments appreciated.:beer

Looking forward to participating here. Having a 61 is a lifelong dream.

Welcome abourd

I had my regulator rbuilt by john pirkle out of georga.

When I first purchased my 66 it had shorts all over the place and extra jumper wires connect to every thing.I purchased a service manual with a wiring diagram and what ever wasnt on the diagram I removed it from the car.I also followed evr wire making sure it was connected as per the diagram and found a few errors once I was done I have never had a problem since.

Good luck and be safe.I know I was ready a post with in the last year on a 61/62 electricly burning up because a wire was pintched or shorted.Untill you find the short I would not leave the battery connected.I hope some one jumps in with a link to the other post
