Just got a 61 beauty and the battery died after sitting for 4 days. Replaced it and the new one died after 2 weeks. Using a 12 volt tester I removed the ground and jumped the ground back to the neg terminal with the ignition off. Got a positive indicator of current flow. Next checked the voltage regulator and got a strong positive (with the neg ground back on the battery) at the hot lead on the bottom terminal.
Two batteries have tested dead after having been in the car for less than three weeks each. One cell appears to be creamed. Charging system checks OK at a local garage with a tester.
Soooo, I believe I have a bad voltage requlator (possibly stuck points) and want to replace it but a buddy advises to get a solid state regulator rather than the old style points regulator.
Am I on the right track?? Advice and comments appreciated.
Looking forward to participating here. Having a 61 is a lifelong dream.
