As the weather has been getting colder here in NY , I have been experencing two problems I beilve to be related to the same thing. Both problems came about at the same time and have been consistant for about a week or so now.

1. I think Im running quite a bit rich , as I can actually smell gas vapors as Im driveing around. Also Im getting that weird thing where you car continues to turn over a few times after the ignition is shut off.

2. I have no choke coming on from a cold start, I have to keep my foot on the gas for a good 2 mins at startup to warm it up, or it just die right out.

I am fairly sure its a carb adjustment as it will run fine arfter warm up, but I have very little experence with carborator adjustments. Im hoping this is something I can address myself with a bit of guidence. I an edelbrock 750cfm electric choke carb Im running. Any advise on where to begin would be great.

Thanks for the tips,
Im hoping it wouldnt be a carb rebuild as its not even a full year old yet. All the lines and filter the same , I did a complete engine revamp last fall. I also wouldnt think Im dealing with water in the lines as this is a daily drive for me .
And No Cheap gas, I only run Sonoco 94 and am on me 3rd tank this week with the same issue.

If I was to check the vacuum advance, or for a stuck jet in the carb or a float where would I begin. keep in mind i have very little experence around this area.

I will give the gumout a try , but its still sparkling clean in their. like I said all parts are fairly new, with a K&N fillter to boot. Im fairly sure I need to adjust the choke , floot , vacume or Im not sure how to do.

My gut feeling is Im tuned for the warmer weather and this cold air is throwing me all out of wack.

Cold air will lean the fuel mixture as cooler air is more dense than warmer air. If you are smelling gas look closely at the intake manifold for signs of leakage from the throttle shaft or gaskets. Often times there will be a stain left behind from a small fuel leak. Also check your hoses from the fuel pump and the pump itself. Idle speed should be around 600 rpm in drive. If your idle is higher than this it may cause your engine to diesel (run after being shut off). I also have an Edelbrock 750, mine is a square bore not a Q-jet. I had to re-jet mine to the lowest set of rods and jets, both primary and secondary. Pull a spark plug or two sometime. If they are brown to gray then the mixture is pretty close. If they are black, sooty, or wet then the carb is way rich. It's possible that the float is too high, or that the choke is not opening. The choke should be wide open after the engine has warmed. If it is not then you need to check to see that the coil is powered(12v) at all times when the engine is running.

Thanks fot the advise, I will check to see if the choke comes off, as well as any signs of leakage around the manifold.

I beleive I have the square bore carb as well. Not positive, but its on the performer series manifold.

I idle around 800 rpm, but that is consistant with where it has always been set. I will knock it down a bit and see if anything changes.

Ok I did a few adjustments and seem to be in better shape all without gumout.

1. I lowered the idle a bit to 700rpm.
2. I tightened the two rear screws which i beleive lean it out a bit
3. I turn the little black circular cover to control the choke to the right a bit. So it now comes on earlier.

It starts right up. Now I have warm up idle at cold start it will stay at 2000 rpm unitl I kick it off with the gas. I no longer smell any gas. and the choke stay open once warm.. also I checked for sings of leakage and did not find any stains .

The only issue now is it seem to be a bit down on power .. especially at idle, it just sounds like its drownding out and just dosnt have the snap it had before.

There is another thing you could check and adjust to see what it does for you. On the front of the carb you will find the accelorator pump linkage. I suspect that it is in the outer most hole. Pull the hair pin and move it to the innermost hole. This will lean the squirter out when you jump on the throttle. If it makes a real difference leave it there or move it to the middle hole and see what you get there. A 750 performer on a stock L81 is a bit big. I had to jet mine down a bunch to get a could crisp throttle. Did you deiseling situation go away with the reduction of the idle speed?

The deiseling did go away after I made some adjustments.

I am pretty faw away from stock on this car. Bored 20 over , Edelbrock RPM heads, the whole nine.

It seems to be running ok after a few days fo driving now, the power is definitly not as avalible as before, but drivable for now as I have to put it up for the winter in a few weeks anyhow.

The only wacky thing i do seem to notice now is for the first 10 minnets of dirve after the warm up idle comes off. my idle seem to drop way down to about 550 RPM then after the engine is good and hot it will pick up to about 850 - 900 RPM.
