Have any of you dealt with minor rust of the windshield pillar frame area? I have 2 or 3 small, quarter size rust spots on the passengers side only. I don't think that there is any structural damage. Is it possible to spot treat these areas, and how would you (or have you) done it? Thanks for any help.

I had to replace the windshield frame onmy 71 vert. Very expensive. If you can stop it now do it. I used por15 on the new one, I would say clean real good and apply por 15 now. robert

You can cut out the rotted metal and weld new metal into those spots its not impossible and the bigest pain is removing all the parts to get to the spots.
I would remove the windsheild and dash parts and really inspect the whole thing and see if you have any other spots that need attention get tham all at once...

Hi Robert -do you recall what the cost was to replace/repair the rusted windshield frame?

You really should have the windshield removed and then inspect the entire frame. Those quarter sized spots could be the beginning or a bigger problem. I removed my own windshield not long ago. Good thing that I did because I found several areas of rust that needed to be treated. I used POR-15,which worked well.

Good luck

Dismantling and treating is probably the best approach. BUT if its not bad go for the quick fix. Take of the trim panels from the inside and treat the exposed areas of the frame. Rust inhibitors have come a long way in recent years. If you have rust you probably have or had a water leak. Stop the leak after treating the exposed area and you should be fine for years to come.

I had a partial frame replaced several years ago on a 1977...from the doors up and all the way around...it cost me $1800. Keep in mind this isn't the best way to do it. Nothing really ever lines up right. FWIW....I found out it need a frame the hard way....jacked the car up on one side and because the windshield frame was rusted my glass cracked.

Dave,

I am with Bob C on this, it is time to pull the windscreen out.
I have an 81 Coupe which always leaked water in heavy rain and the previous owner said that all the rubbers were bad. I took the plastic trims off and found that the urethane seal around the window was dried up and cracked and it had been letting water past. The result is rust. I had a glass guy come around and pull the glass outand I set to work with a wire brush on a drill and POR15. I cleaned up the cowl as well, it had no rust, but this is the weak spot for the bird cage, if you have rust here, you are in trouble. The cowl has tooling holes in it for factory use. They plug these with a sealer, but over time the sealer dries and falls out. Once the urethane gives up on the screen and the water gets in, then goodbye bird frame.

If you are having trouble with the windscreen, also check all body mounts, especially the ones in behind the kick panels. Dry mounts act like sponges and pump water into the cavity.

Cheers

Tony
