I'm about ready to replace my original tires, and was told it would be a good idea to put them in storage rather than dispose of them. Is this really a good idea if stoage space is not an issue?

If you have more than 2000k miles on the car, who cares what the tires look like. If your tires require changing, dispose of the old tires. BTW, keep all records. Bottom line, there are guys out there that purchased their car and parked them. They definately have less than 2k miles on their investments. In 20 years or more, they may be worth money. To me, they wasted their time and money.

If you're concerned about resale, accurate record keeping is important. Your car is an awsome car, drive like you stole it.

In 20 years the rubber will be crap .

not if they are kept properly. and even if it isn't like new collectors aren't looking for soft fresh tires they are looking for origional

They already are crap after 3 possibly 4 years of use, depending upon when he bought the car.

I don't think in 20 years people who buy C5's are going to be looking for "original tires"

As far as storing tires i pulled my 66 impala out of the garage where it sat 20 years inflated the Sears tires that were parked with full tread and drove off. Sears made some damn good tires!

Tires more than 5 years old are getting hard, and have hairline cracks. Even unused tires that are 5 years old get hard. NHTSA is doing a tire aging study to determine how aging affects the performance and safety of tires. Because of problems of tire aging, NHTSA regularly buys newly made custom test tires to assure that testing done for tire ratings are correct. Testing with older unused tires compared to new unused tires makes a difference in tread wear and traction. Definitive testing should be available next year.

If you have storage space, I guess it beats putting them in a land fill. But you will have to protect them from ozone and UV light. I would suspect this could be difficult to do completely for so long a time. Dry rot from ozone makes tires replacement candidates after 5 years or so regardless of tread, so even if I had tires that were twenty years old I don't think I would want to drive on them. Parked on a show floor perhaps.

Heat is a big killer, too. The test tires are kept at about 50 degrees F in a cave.

Why's that?

Do you think people who buy C4's (1984) are interested in original tires now that NCRS is judging these cars?

Just wondering if I'm missing something..

Thanks,
D

Maybe I've missed the mad rush of people "restoring" 84 Vettes.
