Anyone take out their screens in the MAF? Any pros or cons.
Its a stock 2001 LS1 if it matters

Anthony

Did it W/O any problems or tuning.

I was going to do that until I talked to a local corvette speed shop. They do lots of engines, mods, etc., and have a dyno. It makes no additional power, according to them, and serves only to disrupt low throttle air flow calculations, and cause the PCM to continually compensate for imaginary flow changes.

I asked C4C5Specialist about removing the MAF screen and he said that it could cause damage and actually reduce LS-1 performance. I’ve read that removing the screen can increase HP, but C4C5 said it was not worth it.

One of the purposes of the screen is to "straighten" the air out before it hits the hot wire. Seems turbulent air flow on the wire may cause erratic signals.

Ron ... :w

So why then in the 2002 Z06 did they remove the screens from the factory?

Hmmmm.

2002 Z06s come without screens? Interesting.

Yup it sure is interesting.

Hmmmm, it seems that non-straightened air helps produce 405HP.

Any rebuttles.......

Here is the article.

Not really a rebutal, just an observation that the MAF's have been screened since the 80's. If they could gain horsepower by something as simple as leaving the screen out, I'd have thought it would have been done years ago.

As for straight air, isn't that why velocity stacks etc were used on carbs years ago? More consistent tuning?

Years ago, running a Holley equipped SBC late-model stock car at Pinecrest Speedway, ( remember that place? You're from Toronto......<G>) we found out the top end was much stronger with an aircleaner on it. Only thing we could figure was "straight" air.

Ron ... :w

Edit ..... the C5 makes sense too!!!!

Hey , all valid points, I'm not claiming to know the science behind them.

One other thing strikes me as odd, if the screen is there to straighten the air as it passes over the wires, then why the heck is there another screen on the other end?

Hmmmm, any takers on this one

When you actually think about the area the all those tiny wires in the screen take up, I can see why there would be a performance gain, any mathematicians in here care to figure out how much surface area these screens suck up.

No wonder they removed them on the 2002 Z06, but did they put them back in the basemodel vettes, anybody with a 2003 z06 or base model could answer this one.

And as a sidenote Ihave not removed mine yet, still unsure, but it makes sense to me, take a childs plastic pail and pour sand into it, goes in fast eh, now put the childs plastic sand strainer on top, not so fast now eh!!!

Pardon the "eh's" I'm Canadian eh..

Mart

I have the screen on my 2003, and it's staying there until someone refutes the advice from my local tuner.

Ahh, but it's not a Z06 is it!

How do you think they got the extra performance. aside from the obvious mods they squeezed every last drop out of it.

What, nobody wants to explain why it's better or worse, except for "thats what my local tuner told me".

They do not straighten the air.....they are there to prevent debris from hitting the wire, mainly during shipping and assembly.

Corvette Fever has an article in the Wear and Tear section this month,

I'm not sure I buy the debris duing shipping thing, I kinda like the theory behind accidentlaly getting fingers or tools in there, those wires do look fragile.

When you think about all other vehicles, both my other GM vehicles do not have screens on them.

Anybody else have screens on any of thier other vehicles.

Mart

I went with the theory that if the Z06 doesn't have a screen, it must be worth 2-3 hp. I bought a used MAF on ebay for $51 and descreened that one. If anything ever damages the delicate wires on it, I'll just throw the original back on and leave it.

I have had no negatives with the screen gone.

Ken

I have a 01 A4 w/3:15 axle convertible and ran 12:98 @ 103 mph at the C5 bash last year and i removed the screen. Other mods are Firestone Firehawks and KN filter. Works for me

Corvette Fever Article...

Here is the Corvette Fever article taken from page 92 of the April 2004 issue...

The MAF sensor uses a fine wire that's heated to calculate airflow entering the engine. The early MAF sensors could be damaged quite easily and failed quite frequently. The MAF screens were installed to prevent hot wire damage, whether it be airborne debris or a foreign object. The foreign object could be a wrench, a screwdriver, or a finger striking the MAF hot wire when the MAF was not installed on an engine. If the air filter is installed correctly there is no way debris can strike the MAF sensor hot wire. The screen at the front of the early MAF sensor is also there in case the air filter is damaged.

Having the screens cause turbulent air to allow a better fuel mix makes no sense because the fuel is injected directly into the intake port at the intake valve, which is a long way from the MAF sensor screens. The later MAF sensor used on the 94' and up Corvette has a screen at the front of the MAF sensor to prevent debris from damaging the hot wire from the inlet side. There is no screen at the outlet side of the 94' and up MAF sensor, though. If you remove the MAF sensor screens, it will allow additional airflow, the heat sink fins are ground out with a high speed grinder and the screens removed. Removal of the heat sink fins can be tricky, if the hot wire is touched, it can be damaged.

OK, how about this, let's assume that we are all very careful at handling our MAF's to avoid damaging them.

Now lets remove the screen at the back of the MAF (the one closest to the TB), My guess is that the wires are now "protected" from any debris due to Bubba installing your air filter wrong, and yet we have just reduced the restriction of airflowthrough the MAF.

Hmmmm, I might start with this approach.

PS: I'm still working on figuring out the area taken up by the screen itself.
