How many of you who attempted to retrive the VIN # from the Driver side top frame rail over the rear wheel, have done this with out removing the body or jacking it up?

Can this be done with just a mirror and a light source? Can you just pull the rear wheel and put on some eye ball protection...get your fat butt under their and scrape away to find that Number thru that little opening?

Or....pull all of the body bolts out and some other stuff and jack away??

Ok..who wants a shot at this one. Keep in mind..I'm lazzy and cheap like the rest of you so tell me I can just get my butt under their and fish around for that VIN#...

I guess my question would be... why is this necessary? :confused

If you are determined to check the number, I would clean the area off (so the numbers are clear) and then press some SillyPutty over them. Lift the putty out and you'll have a negative of the numberpad. Ta-da!!

A policeman was able to see the number on my 64 by just removing the wheel, cleaning off the area and looking at it with a mirror.

I just removed the body from my daughter's 72 LT-1 and I cannot find a number on the kick-up.

Was that a Road Side Routine Stop with Probable Cause...........:L

As far as the 72 goes..isn't there a different location for the C-3's for the Vin # or is it the same as C-2? Thought I remember seeing somewhere that it's not the same as the C-2......Experts...correct me if I'm wrong......

Yeah I hear OL Blue...Sounds like the way to go Thanks:_rock

Unfortunately, the frame VIN is often obscured by the Rust Monster so it's not possible to find & confirm. I had mine stripped to nothing by frame and never found it.. :(

Always wanted to check it out since I bought the car. Since it not a Numbers match car...I have always been curious. Not that I think that it might not match or anything..just one more part of the car I haven't seen yet.

It's like pulling the carpet up to look for quarters and magizine articals and chewing gum wrappers from 1965. Might be some good Ebay stuff their..:L

So your sying you had a ton of rust up their??

My frame is clean and doesn't show much rust. So this should be fun. It's like the thrill of the Hunt. Got me my special mirrors from work ..and I'll pick up some nice wire brushes from the big Orange Box..(A Kid_Again) Quote..and get me some brewskies and Have at it...;)

The frame had surface rust, nothing structural- thank God- but the number was obscured and, after sandblasting, nothing. The bird cage, however, wasn't as good. The bottom sills... well, they say a picture is worth a thousand words. :(

Viet Nam Vett,
curiosity got to me a few years ago and i had the same desire to look/find my 1963 kick-up vin number. I actually just jacked up the car (did not even remove the tire) and wire brushed off the area that i knew it was in. Once i saw the numbers (with a flashlight and mirror) i cleaned area as well as i could with steel wool and denatured alcohol, smeared on some white shoe polish and was able to read/confirm the numbers. Took less than 5 minutes and yes it was the correct vin. Hope you have the same luck.

Mark, as I have said before -- you are starting to turn to the dark side again :)

Good luck with this adventure. Let us know how you make out.

You know Mac, if you hadn't bought thoose from me they would probably still be collecting dust in my Garage.

Just curious, I too am looking for my VIN number. I'm just confused on where you guys are saying it is. Why hasn't anyone posted a picture to show where to look for these number on the frame? Has no one ever documented their number?

Maybe so but you can't imagine how happy I am with where they're living now!!

For those who don't know, Tom had a set of NOS sills which he was kind enough to sell to me. Having the right parts to weld into place makes all the difference in the world!

Lets see if I can explain it.... Pull Driver side rear wheel.....Locate the frame rail above the trailing arm end where the rear wheel bolts on...You will see a space between the body and the frame rail.... Between this space on the top of the frame rail is the number. In other words...The number should be on the top of the frame rail under the bottom of the body. It should be somewhere along the open space between the body bottom and the top of the frame rail.

It is stamped into the top of the frame rail...:beer

The numbers for my frame are where the two cleaned-off areas are - on the lower frame rail and above the wheel.

VNV,
If you raise the body to check the vin w/o some kind of threat (e.g. proof of ownership, etc...) you need another girlfriend or need to break something on the '65. Waaayy to much time on your hands.

You should be spending your time building that BB. Checking the fram VIN yields no benefit in the following work value factors

hour per HP (hr/HP) - installing a cam or rebuilding an engine
hour per driving time (hr/DT) - fixing a clutch ot tuning
hour per reflection coefficient (hr/R) - waxing, polishing, sanding, painting

Nah....No threat....Nah.....Not an other girlfriend either. The car will be going into a deep sleep for the BB and front end work after Carlisle. I also have some frame clean up to do at the rear area around the kick up. So..I figured as long as I'm their I'll peak at the VIN.

No way am I pulling the body...unless I get freaked and can't sleep thinking about that BB Cast Iron Monster dangeling over the front end of the car on the motor hoist....and devolping a leak and droping down onto the nose......

Yeowwwwwwwwwwwwww...!!!

Besides...I still have plenty of drive time and "Wax On...Wax Off.."to do on the 86. And of course ..there's the Thunderchicken...she needs a little TLC.
So..my hands are full..A Motor heads work is never done..:beer
