I am trying to locate a serial # on my 68 coupe. I recently an acident involing a big deer and total lost the car, and while I was disassemblining the interior, it looks like the vin # on the winshield post might have been tampered with. I'm trying to verify the vin numbers to see if they match. Also, what can be done if they don't, the car is history and I almost was too. Can this go back to the guy I purchased the car from? Also if anyone needs any parts from a 68 coupe, I have everything except the front skin and right door. The car was hit hard on the right front tire.

Hi skitch,
Ask JohnZ on this forum for that information. He should be able to tell you everything you need to know. I do need the piece under the steering column to the dash. How much do you want for it?

Mike

There are three other items that have the VIN number on them (actually, a shorter 8 or 9-digit derivative of the number, including the last six digits). It's stamped on the machined pad on the block just in front of the passenger side cylinder head (if it has the original engine), it's stamped on the vertical rib on the driver's side rear of the main transmission case on a 4-speed (or on the right forward side of the case or on the left side lip of the bellhousing flange on an automatic), and it's stamped on the top horizontal surface of the left frame rail, pretty much directly above the upper shock mounting area (it's also stamped again forward of there, roughly even with the seat, but you can't see it there). The last six digits of those stampings should match the last six digits of the VIN plate riveted to the windshield pillar; if they don't, they're not original to the car.

Hey how good is the center guage cluster and is it smooth finish or textured?:w

Mike, are you talking about the plastic trim piece under the column?
Paintdaddy, the center cluster is smooth finish, and it's in exc. condition. I will take reasonable offers on anything I have. Thanks, Skitch
