Does anyone know what to do to correct a problem with a readout of "Service Column Lock". The car will only go a foot or so before shutting off.

The vette shop had supposedly gotten a part from a dealer for a similar recall and fixed that but they don't know what this is. They said since the steering wheel turns fine it is not the recalled problem. The one who answered the phone was just leaving & suggested I call Grossinger Chevy here & get some code looked up in a book to put in with the remote & reset the computer so I could be on my way.

When I called they claimed not to know what they meant about a locking remote code and said I had to tow & have a service appointment. They also indicated that THEY did the recall fix & that the vette shop just brought it in to them. I didn't want any dealer touching it because I know what they can do to cause other problems. The owner of the vette shop, Doug, won't be in town for awhile for me to address the situation with him directly.

Any ideas to avoid a tow and more problems?

Thank you. My first question is though, is this the same problem as the column lock recall that they said they did install. Is there a steering lock and a service lock. The vet shop seemed to think that the service lock is just a computer glitch that needs resetting and different from the steering lock since my steering wheel still turns fine.

This is the only thing I found on the internet, it was at the end of instructions for the recall fix but again they supposedly ordered the part, installed & sent in paperwork: If a "service column lock" or "pull key and wait 10 sec" error is displayed, remove the key and fuses No. 25 and No. 29 from the fuse panel. Wait 15 minutes and replace.

The switch contacts are apparently not closing when you column lock motor retracts. This causes the error message and shuts off your ignition. The recall fix just addresses the harness problem and disables your column lock. If you want to get rid of the problem entirely, get the bypass.

There are at least a half dozen posts about it here if you do a search.
