Took my 86 vette to corvette specalty service shop for engine service light coming on every second or third startup.

Checked all sensors and tried a new computer but still service engine light coming on every second or third start.
There stumped I am stumped .
There waiting for tec support fax from GM.
Any ideas would be a help at this time

Did you try to read the code from the computer? This is where i would start, because once you find out which code is setting it off then you have a starting point. Reading the code is very easy. I dont have a fancy checker, i just have key from auto zone. You can get the key and book that reads the codes, or a haynes manual or something to that effect will give a listing of various codes. Plug the key into your OBD terminal located under the drivers side dash. It is above me right knee when sitting in the car. Plug the key into terminals A and B i think, turn the key to the one position but do not start. The engine light will blink sets of numbers. the first number it will blink will be 12. it will do this three times. Then it will blink the trouble code stored in memory, if more then one it will continue to the end of the codes and blink 12 once again.

Good luck

Not sure if the MAF and relays are the same for 86 but a search of the forum will surely get the answer you need...

Vetteboy86 gives you good advice here. You have no way of knowing where to go with this problem until you draw the code. Yes the 12 will blink three times then any code that is set will blink three times, after all codes have been blinked, it will blink 12 again three times.

You don't need the fancy key to do this. A paper clip between pins A and B will do the trick.

You don't even need the code book. Just draw the code and post it here so we can tell you where to go from there.

Good luck,

engine light

Thanks for the advice fellas .I have to tell you the car is in the vette shop now.
Problem engine light coming on still

Things that have been done so far

Taken computer readouts --- Get different ones -- Not consistant
Changed computer------ Same problem
Clean contact points on some sensor units---still the same

Faxed GM Canada waitng for advice from tech division

The only change that was made is the exaust system. Soon after the exaust system was installed the engine service light began to come on.

engine light

As I just bought this car I am not sure what was done other than new mufflers
Ken:confused

I dont really see how just having new mufflers on the car would cause the service engine soon light to come on. I did some exhaust work on mine in which i put true dual exhaust on, now sometimes my light comes on indicating an egr malfunction. It only comes on when i am doing highway driving. i haven't go around to doing anything about it. Even if you have an intermittent problem the codes should be stored in the computer. The easiest way to reset these codes is by taking the battery terminals off. What codes did you say that they were able to retrieve?

Keep us posted on the progress
