I am considering replacing the rusted frame on my 72. I have a line on a real nice frame from a 79. Aside from the rear bumper mount would I face any problems with the swap? Any input would be great. Thanks.

There are a dozen small things, but nothing you can't easily overcome. We are doing the same thing on a 71.

If your 72 is a stick shift, it would be good if the 79 is as well. Otherwise, you have to have the pivot welded to the driver frame rail.

If your 72 is an auto, you need an auto trans frame from the 79 as the stick frames have the center x member welded solid.

Give us more details, and we can help.

Thanks for the reply. The 79 frame and my 72 are both automatics and my 72 is a small block.

Different body mounts. The 72 used a solid mount while the 79 uses a rubber mount. So you would need to go with rubber mounts to maintain the bodies relationship to the frame.

Tom,

It is interesting that you mention that. I don't recall a difference in the 71 vs. 79 frame swap that we just did regarding the body mounts. That is that I recall. We set it up on the aluminum body mount spacers and did not have any problems (that I am aware of). The car is not anywhere near finished yet. I will have to check this out to make sure we are not going to run into a problem.

I'm feeling better about the idea. I've noticed that there are different part numbers in the catalogs for the number 2 & 3 frame mounts. Minor problem. I've had a quick look to compare the two frames and I did not notice any difference except after the #4 mount. I guess if I cut the last foot or so, just past the #4 mount and replace it the last foot or so from the 72 I should be home free. If I'm missing something, please let me know. This is my first attempt at a Vette.

Also, a friend of mine who has some experience with these cars suggested that if I take the body off the frame to use the newer style mount kits instead of a kit for a 72. Something about them giving a little and making the car more quiet. Newer technology I suppose. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Norm
