The shifter on my '79 (auto transmission) can be moved into any gear, without depressing the button. Not a huge problem, but I'd like to fix it, anyway. Any idea what causes this?

Thanks,
Joe

There is a metal nub that moves along an arc that has notches in it. This is what restircts the movement of the gear lever. It must be broken. If you take of the console you should see the workings clearly. It is very simple mechanism.

So, I finally had time to pull my console apart. The "nub" is definitely broken off (actually, while I can't be certain, it almost looks like it might have been cut off...).

Does anyone know what the actual part that needs to be replaced is called? It looks like it is the center shaft, but there has to be an official name...

Also, any tips on dismantling the shifter? Anything to watch out for?

Thanks,
Joe

On the 1980 it has four little bolts that go into the tranny tunnel on the floor. I think the cable has a C clip that needs to be removed. If you go that far you may as well change the shift cable.
