My 67 roadster has an aftermarket Hurst shifter and linkage in it. I just bought an original shifter, linkage and bracket and I would like to put it in.

My question is...do I have to drop the trans to make the swap? The Hurst is a tight fit, but I think I could get it out if I loosened some bolts. Can I get the original in without any headaches?

Any information or experiences would be helpful.

Thank in advance.

Shifter swap

Jake,

If you can get the Hurst out, you can put the muncie in.

Of course, you do have the muncie linkage alignment tool in your toolbox, don't you? You will need this when setting the shifter up.

If my memory is correct, its description is in the Service Manual or the AIM, its a piece of flat stock, about 0.04" thick and 0.600" wide. (Hurst uses a .25" dowel to set the linkages.) Just put the trans in neutral before removing the hurst first. with the trans still in neutral, and the shifter installed, nowput the tool into its locating slot and attach the shifter rods as described in the AIM. This would also be the right time to replace any worn pieces and use new "G" retaing clips.

The installation and adjustments are easiest WITHOUT the under car exhaust pipes. Take the front pipes out if you can. Disregard if you have side pipes though.

E-mail me off line if you need to for any further help.

Where in Chi are you? I'm in Bolingbrook, a SW burb.
