Just curious, has anyone had a problem with shifting from fourth to fifth and it wanting to go into reverse? This has happened to me three times. I thought maybe it was me but Saturday my husband did the same thing. Did not have a problem from July (when we bought her) thru November when we put her away for the winter. Hopefully it's not us.

Thanks,
Donna

I've always felt a little tentative shifting into 5th, but never had a problem. The reverse lockout always works for me.

What happens- does it grind or not want to go into 5th?

Tammy

I have had it happen once or twice. But the lockout almost always works.

I do remember something in the manuel that said you couldn't shift into reverse going over three mph. Now does that mean that if you do miss fifth gear will you hear grinding? I think I am going to ask the tech at my work (Nissan store) that used to work for a Chevy dealership, exactly what is going on. Greg works on my car if its something non-warranty. If he's not sure, I'll call the Chevy dealership where we bought it, and talk with the Service Advisor I usually deal with. I just wanted to see if someone else had this experience before questioning it.

Thanks,

Donna

Well I have had it happen too. I can't seem to reliably duplicate it. However I think it's not reverse that is trying to happen but some condition where fifth doesn't want to engage. It's been real infrequent (for me) and usually happens when I'm trying to shift fast.

Called the Chevy dealership and have an appointment for Tuesday morning. Need to have everything checked over since the in-service date was April 23, 2003. We had a leak in the differential and want that checked again. The Service Advisor I use said he hadn't heard anything about a problem with the shifting but will have the Corvette tech check it out. Will report what they find if anything.

Once the car is rolling forward at more than (I think it's 3 MPH, could be 5 MPH) the reverse lockout should prevent you from going through the gate into reverse. I'm pretty sure my own car has a failed solonoid, ground reverse a couple of times before I got smart about it, now I'm just carefull how far across I let the shifter go so that it doesn't go past the 5th/6th gate and into the reverse area.
I don't know if physically removing the solonoid and checking it for proper electrical and mechanical functioning is the only way to check it or not. There must be a way to computer analyze seeing that it is a controlled device that must recieve some info from the bcm.

Donna,
You are correct: the automatic lockout engages once you are going more than 3 miles per hour. You will not be able to shift into reverse above that speed. Anyone who has ever tried to pull back end into a parking space will be able to relate to how you have to come to a complete stop in the parking lot before the car will engage into reverse.

If the problem you're experiencing is that the car either isn't shifting into fifth, or you're getting a grinding noise, that sounds like a problem with fifth gear itself, not with the lockout.

Let us know what your Service Advisor identifies is the problem.

Re adjust the shifter and it will be just fine!! C4C5specialist posted a Diagram on how to do so!! Tammy found it for me!! Now I've had no problems!!:upthumbs

Does anyone have the link address? Will you post it?
I've been Look'n for it, But I think I've lost it again!!:W

HI there,
One thing that should be mentioned here.
The reverse lockout solenoid is NOT A FIXED plunger when engaged.
It is spring loaded solenoid, so that if for some reason it fails you can still push PAST IT.
29 lbs of force will override and push past the solenoid.
Just be aware before you assume it NOT working
A shifter adjustment may help your condition, but do NOT expect to NOT be able to push past the solenoid.
This is a much better link than the instructions I have posted.
