Shifting problem on my 98 Auto

my 98 auto shifts fine thru all 4 gears when in D"overdrive".In third it shifts thru all three gears no problem..But i noticed that when I put her in 2 from a dead stop that I am not getting FIRST gear.. It is starting out in Second gear and staying in second till i shift into third gear.?.I can shift into First at a stop and first is fine ..Shouldn't i get FIRST gear even though the shifter is in SECOND from a dead stop.??

Nope!! It's Locked in Second!! This can be handy for different driving conditions!!

As the Junk says, that is normal. I used to use that feature with my '97 A4 in the autocross. I would start in first, then lock it into second early in the course. There was plenty of torque in second for the courses that I was used to running.

Shift into 2nd at a dead stop if it's raining or snowing for better traction.
