Shifting, especially out of reverse is hard. My dealer said the problem was the master cylinder which was replaced today. Now, he's telling me I also need a new clutch for $900. Sounds fishy to me. Any thoughts?:w

My only thoughts are, a clutch doesn't cost that much, at all... ever... You just need to find a new person. He's just trying to give you the run around to make his pocket heavier.

Hi,

Let's see,

The clutch master cylinder is about 160.00
The clutch, pressure plate, thow out bearing about 250.00
Turning the flywheel is about 25.00

That's 435.00 leaving about 465.00 for labor. They are not going to do this for nothing?

I'd like to know what lead them to replace the Clutch Master Cylinder, then determining afterward that the clutch was bad.

$900 does not sound far fetched to me. Because you needed the cylinder and because you needed a new clutch, please don't blame the mechanic (if it's legit).

ps. While the tranny is out, how are the front and rear trans seals, how are the drive shaft u-joints? Replace the transmission mount, they are cheap enough. And be ready for the "while we're there" phone calls. A responsible mechanic won't be afraid to call and give YOU the choice to procede with additional findings. I've always hated it when somebody put something together for me and afterwards telling me he "saved" me some money and did short cuts...let us decide!!!

A symptom of a dragging clutch is high shift effort. The problem can be caused either by clutch hydraulics or the clutch itself.

I'd bleed the system per the service manual. If the problem persists, since you've already replaced the clutch master, check the clutch slave. If that's not a problem, you may need to replace the clutch.

oh ps the c4 doesnt have a tranny mount .it has the c beem. you might ck to see if the tq is right on the front and back bolts or intstall one of the zfdocs set of beem plates which do amazing things ,like keeping the car from kicking out when speed shifting from 1st to second
