In the '67 Service Manual, under "adjusting the idle speed and mixture", there is a blurb which is foreign to me. Step #3 says "Adjust idle mixture screw to obtain highest steady idle speed (1/4 turn out from lean roll)".

What the heck is a "lean roll", a low calorie egg roll? Thanks :D

There is a point where you can adjust the idle mixtire and have the engine RPM sort of hunting around. It wants to stall then it sorta picks up then it starts to stall then it sorta picks up. As a rule of thumb, your engine may be different, an extra 1/4 turn is all you need. A 1/4 turn more beyond that roll point point is what you shoot for. In the old days there were crude exhaust samplers that could be used to more accurately help adjust the mixture by sampling the exhaust.

Thanks Nutmeg, I figured it was something like that. What I did was close both the idle screws and backed them out two turns to start with. Got the engine up to operating temperature and then slowly closed the needle valves until I could hear the engine start to stumble.

Then I back them out slowly until I got the highest vacuum reading on my manifold gauge, which was about another 1/4 turn out and 17 inches of Hg. :D
