Shorter throw

There are some comments on various threads about shortening the 6-speed's throw by removing the shift knob, cutting approximately an inch off, threading about an inch of the remaining shaft, and reinstalling the knob.

This makes a lot of sense just thinking about the geometry involved. It also saves replacing the whole stock shift assembly -- which is now quiet -- with a Hurst or other brand.

I would appreciate hearing any opinions and experiences about this mod.

I am concerned with gaining a rattle or other noise if I replace the assembly with a Hurst or other brand.

Are there any problems after cutting off the top of the stock shaft? About how much should I cut off... 1 inch... or more... or less?

From those who have done it, I have not heard of a negative side effect by doing that.

I have a Hurst shifter on my '02 and while the throws are noticable shorter, it's also stiffer. The package comes with some springs that you can use to change the stiffness so you can tailor it to your comfort level.

Some folks have used the C6 shifter handle as a replacement and you get a shorter throw while keeping a stock look. Much cheaper than the aftermarket shifters too.

The stock shifter has a rubber insulator and this is not found in the aftermarket shifters. That can cause some noise from vibration, but I have not seen this at all with my Hurst shifter. One trick to reduce any noise from the handle is to add another shift boot under the stock one. Some people cut holes in a tennis ball and slide it down on the shfter shaft.

there are some tutorials out there on how to do this -
I dropped mine about 7/8ths of an inch.
Any further and I would have needed to add some threads to the shifter.
(So glad I can see the AC controls now)

I got what seems like a somewhat shorter throw by replacing the stock shift knob with a billet ball. It looks good and seems to have reduced the overall height of the stick.

But I won't measure the stick before and after because it seems to have shortened the effective length. I'm satisfied and it didn't exceed my skill level.
