Has anyone heard of Saratoga side pies?? I was told by the previous owner of my '77 that it has "Saratoga Side Pipes". The primary tubes are in real good shape all the way to the collectors but the main tube on the passenger side has some cracking chrome in one spot. I was hoping I could replace just the main tubes if I could find the manufacturer and I could buy just that part. Maybe it's just wishful thinking but figured I'd give it a try.

Thanks,

Doug :confused

side pipes

If they are what I think they are, the're hookers you might be able to get them from hooker headers they are listed in Summit and a couple of the corvette parts books like mid-america, ecklers just to name a few. Hope this helps.

bonks69,

Thanks, I think you were right about them being Hookers. I just got my Eckler's Catalog and they had Hookers that looked just like what I have. It said they were only for '63-74 and mine is a '77. Is there that much of a difference between 74-77 ? All I need is the side tubes and they look like they are the same.

Thanks,

Doug

I'm gonna try to attach a pic showing the side pipes on the car

Unless , somehow Im not seeing them right, Those are Hooker side mounts, Chrome. about 1100 new from summit.

The difference is that anything past 74 they were not an option, you can pick up the side pipes from just about any pro shop, Ecklers, summit etc

Thanks for the feedback guys. Glad to know I can replace them when I'm ready.

Will those fit a stock 81? I would LOVE to have a set of those chromies hangin under my doors !

81 sidepipes

Do you have O2 sensors on that 81? If you do you will have to weld bungs in for the O2 sensors. Someone on here has put them on an 82 I think. I know they will work if you do not have O2 sensors for sure. Nothing sets a vette apart like sidepipes.:cool :cool :cool

Actually the reason they are listed for models up to '74 is because by putting them on anything '75 and later eliminates the cat-converters, it basicly prevents Hooker and dealers from being liable if you break the law by putting them on anything newer than 1974. They will fit up to 82, but may need modification as stated above for the O2 sensor if so equipted..

You can order the Hooker sidemounts with the o2 sensors installed.

But make sure to use a heated O2 sensor, since the exhaust will be too cool to heat the sensor if you mount it with headers...

Hello Buckethead!
Well, I believe you are reading the guy who remade the 69 corvette sidepipe covers. I have done extensive research, have original prints and a few sets that I still have in the original cartons. As far as "saratoga pipes", I cannot say that I heard of any till your statement.
Personally, since your year did not have any factory sidepipes, nor did any after the truly 1969 model (many sets were still available at special order if the dealer did not have them, and with a little rube goldberging you could install them), would not look right on your year, and I am betting that the saratoga type does not look that cool either. Your car value will jump if kept as much as stock as possible. I would remove them and get a stock set either from the dealer or several honest second sources as corvette supply houses because they all fit and sound good, give you better gas mileage and extra horses if you choose the correct set. You will get better ground clearance and less scrape noises.
But if you really feel they are cool and whatever, you may want to try Ecklers in Floida first and then Bairs Corvette in Lines ville, Pa. They know pretty much about everything in a vette and if they cannot help you, then maybe the saratoga statement was a little marketing from a guy who had his own bent and installed. You can also try a Speedy Muffler or Midas muffler shop who have the equipment and material to bend you a set of pipes identical to what you have on and I believe that this is where your set was born.
Good luck in your search, but our model is cool just the way it came from the factory.

EdBerry, you state you have some still in the carton?

I have a 73 that I am contemplating putting sidepipes on. I already have headers that I was going to hook into the original undercar exhaust, but the sidepipes just look/sound cool. My car is not original, and probably never will be, not orig eng, or tranny.

Would you be looking at getting rid of the spares you have? If so, what kinda price? Hookers are going for $650.

Frankly, I am not looking to get rid of them. I will tell you that if your side exhaust is not factory diameters, the covers will not wrap around them with enough room. You will need a pair of insulators that attach on the inside of the covers which in turn connect to the side black plastic piece below the doors to keep them in place. There are also insulators and a "Z" bracket that attaches in the rear of each side to keep the exhaust cover away from the exhaust pipe of your pipes. If these aftermarket pipes are not the same diameter as the originals that the covers were made for, the excessive heat may "blue" the chrome and rapidly deteriorate the insulation (molded layers of ridgid gp or pvc composit in at least two layers), that can dangerously burn your lets if you touch the pipes while exiting the vette.
As for price? the originals are worth about #3000.00, and my replicas that last ten times longer about half of that.
I had attempted to make the insulator backings by designing and having tooling for heat molding of the fiberglass material but stopped suddenly when the cost of this die exceeded $8,000.00!
For the people who pleaded for them, and the cost to be divided into each set, I felt the cost was too much. I believe these units are now being made by a private contractor who sells them to several corvette outlets but be careful, some are only in it for the 100% mark-up and the costs are overbearing in most cases.
Your logic demands a few Kudos and I undestand the bogus parts that are on the vehicle, but if you really want to keep it original here is a few suggestions----Keep the money you would have spent on the covers and get a hold of Chicago Corvette Supply. give them your serial numbers, casting numbers on the trans and rear and they may have a engine that matches in set. You would purchase this engine, go over it and install it in place of your bogus one, second, little parts that are missing from the vehicle can be bought either at shows, outlets as Bairs Corvette in Linesville, Pa. or the dealer. A little at a time will make this a loving project with not going broke all of a sudden. Used parts? not a problem for fitting your year, call Contemporary Corvette, the largest scrap yard on the east coast and ask for Rocco. Tell him what you need and let him do the professional probing to get you the parts in an honest reply with always a policy of returning or exchanging if what you get is not good enough.
Thanks for the e-mail and hope this helps out. any other questions will always be answered.
Regards, Ed
