I am (finally) getting ready to drop a botton-up rebuilt 350 s.b. 1970 LT-1 in my 79. (the numbers L-82 will be perserved) I am going back and forth as to hookers side mount headers that 90 degree out to a 4 into 1 4" side pipe. Or to run hedman (#368300) jethot ceramic coat headers to a true dual exhaust/no cats. I can't help but like the look-feel of the side pipes, but I don't know if it is suitable for a 79, if it does not look too much "after-market" and there is defineity a price difference. I don't think there would be any signifiant performance gain.......... any thoughts. Jon

Jon,

I looked at a number of vettes before buying my 77 and the one that stood out was the 78 with side exhaust. I have the hooker true duals on mine and it sounds great, but I loved the look and sound of the side exhaust on the 78. I was seriously considering side exhaust on mine until I decided I need to sell it.

My vote is definitely for side exhaust. It gives the car a great look, sound, and awesome performance.

jon79flavette,

I also have true duals, no cat, love the boost but after the Valve cover incident I said heck with it and purchased the new covers and while the CC was still hot and in hand did the hooker side pipe combo purchase, a bit on the $$ side, 1k for the set non chrome but worth it in my opinion.

Chrome on excessive heat parts wont last, so covers are going to be in the next round of parts, once the CC cools off a bit :)

thanks for the info bill, with more reserch this is where I am now at:
crome headers (hooker) 876.69 chrome side pipes 308.39 with glass packs total $1185.08 shipping only 7.75. If I go to a cerramic hot-coat (looks good on these headers) the headers are 569..95 total: 878.34. over 300 bucks difference! I didn't even inquire about the black, but this vette is yellow, and the black may be a nice set-off and save some bucks also. Just wanted the chrome to match with the origial rallys, which fortuneatly are in prestine cond. Jon

Ya the rims add a nice touch to the car, but ya know it might help to draw the on lookers eys off Chrome and back to the car :)

And of course there is my option, Chrome or Chrome looking covers (fiberglass).. nothing like the smell of burning flesh on the side pipes to help you make up your mind :L

Yea, good point. Just to illustrate how we "men" as jennifer always tells me - get obseesed with our cars........... We went out to dinner the other night. She had a dress on, and as she got into the car, I couldn't help but think of this damm side-pipe debate I am having, rather than pay attention to the dress, her etc. I am thinking about the CAR! I could almost smell it buring on those pipes!!! A little humor.... but true. Jon

Jon,

I hear that, one time at band camp.. oh wait sorry that was a movie :L

Seriously though I think all vette owners are the same, we think more about the car then our "better?" half :)

And even the burning legs, I was actually thinking about my legs not my wifes :duh
