slight popping at startup

recently I noticed my cars popping through the carb, it got pretty bad. I had a clear distributer cap, come to find out that the cap had a lot cracks in it, just about everywhere.. and the rotor tip was loose, almost ready to come off.. when the car first starts there is slight popping from the exhaust, and if I slightly rev the motor it sounds like it's sputtering.. I'll hold the rpm to 1200-1400 for about 30 seconds and it seems to clear it out.. then it runs fine... could this be spark plugs that are fouled??

First i would get your ducks in a row. replace cap rotor and wires if needed. check firing order and make sure that it is right. Would not advice reving the motor when its popping in either direction. Once you have the new parts in check timing. Once the new parts steps are taken you may not have the problem any longer. Start here let us all know the results...

yes, I replaced the cap and rotor, the wires have only a few thousand miles on them, there accels 8.8 I have a msd ignition with an ajustable timing control inside of car.. everything is in order.. I have not yet pulled a plug to see what it looks like... but will if needed..
