Greetings, I have a 04 Z06 with approx 3200 miles. I purchased the car new a few months ago. Lately, I have noticed that there is a lot of "play" in the shifter. I did not notice this during the first 3,000 miles. For example, when the car is in 4th gear - i can move the shifter approx 1 to 2 inches back and forth without coming out of 4th. Im thininking that the transmission is breaking in and the shifter has gotten lose. I know that the "throws" are long, but does anyone else have this "play" in the shifter? - - Is there a way that the dealer can adjust it?

Thanks in advance...Mike

There's no adjustment to the stock OEM shifter. If you have that much play, then either the plastic bushing that sits on the lower end of the shifter broke and fell off, there is something else wrong with the shift rod to the transmission, or there is something wrong with the shift fork inside the transmission. Is 4th gear the only gear that has all this play?

shifter.

The shifter is pretty sloppy in all the gears. I did notice that the excessive amount of speace in the shifter occurs only when the car is in 4th gear.
I'm going to drive another z06 to see if it has the same shifter feel.
thanks for your help. Mike

Just for comparison sake, mine is a 2002, and has about 28,500 miles on it now. The free play in any gear is about 1/8 inch, pretty tight for a stock OEM shifter. I would guess the average is going to be more along the lines of 1/4 inch of free play on a stock OEM shifter.
