I have been reading this forum for a while and I finally needed some help so I registered and today I am the new guy.

I am rebuilding a 78 Silver Anniversary that someone has removed virtually everything not related to going. I bought a smog system from a corvette shop and it looks like the picture in my assembly manual and the catalogs all have pictures of the same parts but the bracket for the adjuster doesn't line up. Does anyone have a digital picture of a 1978 L-48 engine with the smog stuff on it that they wouldn't mind sending to me?

Not sure if I can help...

...I have a 78SA, my smog equipment has been removed however I still have the bracket attached to the front of the engine. Would a pic of that assist you? (you did ask for a pic with smog equip intact)
If so, I would take a pic and email it to you. Just let me know.
Heidi

Good luck with your restoration!

Heidi,I was just curious.Did removing all that restrictive Smog equipment increase your HP enough to really notice the difference? If I wasn`t in Cali I would have taken that stuff off a long time ago.:beer :beer

Do you own an Assembly Instruction Manual, AIM? These manuals are incredibly valuable tools in the assembly and repair of our Corvettes. My 72 AIM has clear images of how the AIR system goes together. If you don't have an AIM, try the NCRS web site at www.ncrs.org and go to the store. Best money you will spend on your car.

Was a California vette all her life...until we moved away!

I of course had considered removing the smog equipment, but had never actually gotten around to making the plans to do so, until my smog pump froze up on me one day. I cut the belt with a knife to get home, and we never got around to replacing the smog pump.
We have since removed more smog equipment and installed dual chambered exhaust. I did notice a difference with the smog pump belt removed, but the best overall difference has been with the better flowing exhaust.
People are now trying to talk me into a bigger manifold and carb...and I'm not sure I want that much more power. I am very happy with her as she is. (NOM, GM 350 crate engine) I did lose some low end torque with the larger exhaust...but I've been told I can get that back with tuning. (and a bigger manifold and carb...but I'm balking!)

These changes pretty much insure that we will remain in Georgia and not return to CA. I don't want to change anything back.

We also have the AIM and it has been INVALUABLE!

I had to install the smog equipment on my 78 L-82 Pace Car when I moved to Colorado. There was no performance difference that I could tell. However, I did move from Tampa, Florida (sea level) to Colorado Springs (6000ft). However, my emissions did change. They got cleaner! I guess all of that stuff really does work for what it is supposed to do.

smog stuff

Heidi,
I put everything in according to the assembly manual. I even tried several different ways to arrange it. I think I have the wrong adjusting brace but until I can find a picture I can't tell for sure. If you can send me a picture I would like very much to have it.

It's in the email!

I just checked my email a short bit ago and have taken 3 pics and sent them on their way to you. The pics turned out really well and show the brackets from 2 different angles, so I hope they will be helpful to you.
I hope these pics of the brackets without the smog pump in there will give you a better view of how they are supposed to align.
Sorry it took me so long to get a reply heading your way!
Heidi
