Couple weeks ago I posted a thread asking if anyone had transmission symptoms of "won't go into reverse at all, 3rd is almost never available, and 2nd is getting worse". I had adjusted the shifter four times, had someone else who had done it before look at it, so that wasn't an option. I finally decided that the transmission was just 40 years old and wanted some new stuff. Bought the rebuild kit and all. So yesterday was the day I started pulling the transmission and going after that bad boy. I had driveshaft off and the rear motor mount along with the left exhast pipe. I removed the shifter and as I was crawling out from under the car, just reached up to hit the reverse lever on the transmission (obstensively to show the car who rules). It clicked right in to reverse. I could not believe it. I shifted it a couple more times and it was smooth as silk. Same with 2 and 3. I couldn't make it not go into gear. I crawl out from under with the shifter and take a closer look. There is that sound of a falling part hitting the garage floor and I am thinking I don't need to lose any parts yet!! Look down at my feet and there is this round thing just beat to hell. Dented. Bent. Cut. You name it. My son takes a closer look and declares that he is now a quarter richer. You got it. There was a quarter jammed in my shifter that you could not see when it was in the car. It was stopping the car from shifting correctly. Nothing wrong with the transmission. Nothing wrong with the shifter. They all went back in perfectly and worked just fine. Yeah. I sure do rule this car. Dunderhead!!

Fastest tranny rebuild in history. ;)

You know I always say you have to look at things with a mecanics eye. Sometimes you always look for a major problems when its just something silly. Go figure who could have guessed it.

Best of luck and this may be one for the record books

Sounds like a classic "Bubba" fix for shifter vibration/buzz - pull the boot and jam something in there until the noise stops :D

Bubba is everywhere - you never know where you'll find his tracks next! ;LOL

I just wish Bubba wasn't so damn industrious. :(
