Spare tire, for what?

I never bothered to look to see exactly what kind of spare was in the well when I bought my '66. Today I dropped it down and what did I find? A brand new 15" tire on a steel wheel with a 4 way lug wrench wrapped in a towel on top of it. What was I supposed to do with that? The car has real knock offs on it. Well, real reproductuon knock offs I should say. :D I need to find a stray knock off for a spare now. I guess I'll need some different hardware to hold the well up if I change to a knock spare too won't I?
 
The 4 way was there to remove the knock off adapter then put the spare on.... Dave...
 
I had the same dilemma. I found you could change a rear KO on the road with a steel spare by removing the KO adapter, but it doesnt work well for the fronts. I've found the only way to remove a properly installed front KO adapter is to have someone stand on the brake pedal while you loosen the lug nuts. Hard to do when you are alone. The cross bar may have helped, but you're not going to get them off with the stock tire iron.

I searched high and low for a reasonable "spare" KO but in the end, I ended up buying a new one. Also needed to get the KO length bolts for the spare tire carrier.

my 65 with KOs - same thing - a brandy new stock size tire on a steel wheel awaited me in the tub. The thought occurred to me that I would really hate removing the hub if I had a flat, didn't think it through to the problem of trying to undo hub lug nuts without a tire snug on the ground to keep the thing from spinning.

Also looked high and low for a single KO in the used parts market, gave up and bit the bullet, and tada, I see a few singles on ebay within a few weeks. :eyerole

look for a single, and when the time is up and you haven't found one you can bite the bullet and get a new single at Paragon or your supplier of choice.
 
Thanks for the input guys. I guess I should find out how many points you lose having a steel spare in the tub given that the KO's are repros anyway.
 
Terry - All of the tires including the spare are worth 60 points. All of the wheels are worth 75. I think by dividing the total by 5 you would come pretty close to the deduction for an incorrect spare. (60+75)/5 = 27pts for the spare. This would be perhaps representative of a total deduction. This is for the spare only not the tub etc.
 
For flight judging, do I understand correctly that having a tire made by a manufacturer that was used in '66 is better than using one that is not if you are running radials? I've got some fairly old Firestone radials on the '60 that I want to replace due to age concerns more so than treadwear. I have some newer Michelins on the '66. Maybe I'll get new radials for the '66 and put the Michelins on the '60. I'm not going the bias ply route. What manufacturers products can I use on the '66 given that I want to run radials to minimize deductions?
 
As I understand it --

Current day radials oem brand with equvalent sizing designation will get you a 60% deduct on tires. Whitewall oems were Goodyear, Firestone, US Royal, BF Goodrich, General Jet Air.

Current day radials non-oem brand with equvalent sizing designation will get you a 75% deduct on tires.

All others 100% deduction

Terry this is all explained in the NCRS Judging reference manual. It also tells you about batteries as well. It is a good book to have if you are going to flight judge the car. I do not have the latest version -- need to get it. Picked up a new JM at carlisle -- dont know how I forgot this book -- chalk it up to age :)
