I have an '85 that has a courtesy light which would illuminate the area around(under) the spare tire. It is really the coolest looking thing, illuminating the pavement under the car. I also have a '93 but that doesn't seem to have it, unless the bulb is out. The manual has no mention of it. When did they do away with it?? thanks.

It would be incredibly easy to wire one in off the left or right rear side markers if you just HAD to light up the pavement. For serious tire changing use the 12 volt plug in trouble light and 5 road flares.

Good trivia on what year the lamp disappeared. I guess '91.

It had no purpose. My 92 had it, never worked, never needed it.:beer
My 95 does not have it.

It may have disappeared with the availibility of EMT tires. Even though a spare was still there, the light may have been dropped.

The light works fine on both my 87 and 92. If you have ever had to change a tire at night, you know that any amount of light that helps to find the bolt to release the carrier is a big plus!! Now I have a old stoplight bulb holder and 12 feet of wire with a accessory plug on the other end. Just plug it into the cig lighter socket and instant light. I keep it in the passenger side storage compartment in an old sock.

Brilliant (not intended) idea, wonder why I never thought of that!! Doesn't the socket get too hot to hold???, or do you have it taped up or otherwise insulated?

Mine works :D

I insulated it with some pieces I cut from the rubber housing from an old trouble light. Just cut a piece to fit around the housing and zip-tied it together. I'm going to try to fashion a small reflector for the bulb out of some aluminum sheet.

How about a lawn mower headlight ? built in reflector.:)

course it is a little bigger .
