Hi
My 96 LT1 vette came with run flats that are no longer on the car and were replaced with regular tires.

The question is, my spare tire is 85% covered by the tire carrier.

What should l see if l dropped the tire carrier? The reason l do not want to touch it is that the spare tire has never been down and l don't want to have sqeaks coming from the rear because l was curious.

Is it a full size tire? Is it mounted on a regular Mag, like the rest or is it just a tire to get you home.

By the way it appears to be smaller, but l was hanging upside down when l noticed it.

Thanks

Alan

The spare is one of those compact space-saver narrow tires mounted on a narrow steel wheel made specifically for that application. It's a good idea to drop the spare twice a year to check tire pressure (60psi).

The carrier is held up by a bolt so tightening it up after checking the spare should not cause any squeaking or rattling. The factory lug wrench is all you need to get the bolt tight. Don't go too tight as the carrier tab the bolt head fits on is part of the fiberglass carrier.

You'll probably find a bunch of dirt and debris in the carrier and the tire should be pretty dirty.

You should drop the tire and check the air pressure. I dropped mine and found that after nine years it only had about twenty pounds of air in it, (no good) it calls for sixty pounds. A flat spare is no better than no spare!
