1977 L-82 4-Spd
I'm restoring my 1977 L-82 4-spd Corvette in a ground-off from a $1500 basket case. I'm trying to find out if the car had two, three or four spark plug heat shields (not to be confused with the chromed ignition shields) which are mounted under the exhaust manifold ram horns. Which spark plug heat shields did it have and which areas of the engine did they go?

Please don't ask me to look up my Factory Assembly Manual or my 1953-1977 Corvette Parts and Illustrations Book (about the thickness of a large phone book). They don't show them.

I own a 77 L-48.
Looking at my 77 assembly manual, page 287, it does show 4 heat shields, 2 one each side.

There is one mounting hole underneath (on the block) between the plugs where they mount.

ArkShark,

Thank you for your reply.

You're correct, but that same assembly manual, page 287 only shows the right side of the engine; according to several corvette parts suppliers (Paragon, etc), they say only one shield was used on the left side and it was on the left rear only. In fact, I think both the Left Rear and the Right Front Spark Plug Shields are identical.

If that is the case, why would the Factory install three, and not four, Spark Plug Heat Shields?

Well, to be honest, I only have two heat shields on mine.
They are on the rear (towards the firewall).
Nothing on the front. I just figured after looking at the pictures that there would be four. I guess its possible to only be three... but...

I checked my block, and there are 4 mounting holes...so it looks like theres room.

Also, if you check page 249, you can see the other side of the engine, and it shows in the diagram two shields.

Theres also a sensor that mounts there...maybe some people had issues with the sensor & heat shield.

Heat shields

There are two heat shields on each side, they are held on by two chrome wing nuts on each shield. Hope this helps
