Does anyone know the function of the factory spark plug wire aluminum boot covers? Do they need to be retained when replacing wires?

They are just for heat. When I changed plugs last time I left them off-but keep them, then I went with a good hi-po plug wires-everything is fine without them.:thumb

Plugs Wires

Any suggestions for wires

MSD SuperConductors is what I used on all my Corvettes, C5, 4 and 3.

I put those stock alum. heat shields back on my new MSD 8.50mm wires. They just help keep heat off the plugs as designed. Later, I installed a set of Kool Sox, more for looks than function. I likey!! :thumb

A lot of guys use the G.M.red hi-po plug wires-I paid 60 dollars for mine. You can spend 100 to 200 dollars for plug wires, not needed on a stock vette if you are running turbos headers etc.then I would go with them:thumb

I went with those red wires on my Z06 and I used the boot covers. I do have headers, though, don't know how that makes a difference in temps underneath the hood versus the exhaust manifolds.

I agree the G.M. red hi-po wires are the best bang for the buck. As mentioned the aluminum sleeves are a heat shield. The G.M. engineers put them on for a reason. I'd leave them on.

HI there,

The reason is for additional EMI suppression why the aluminum housings are over the plugs.

Notice that the spring contacts the cylinder heat at the bottom, to ground anything produced.

Allthebest, c4c5
