Question: Speedo cable

Can the speedo cable be removed from the tranny end only? Do you have to undo the attachement at the speedometer also?
 
It has to come out grom behind of the speedo. The end that fits into the speedo is larger than the housing, thus it has to slip out that way.
 
I was afarid of the I hate taking apart the dash to get behind the speedo, but I need a new tack board anyway so I guess I will attack it. Hope I don't break anything. Thanks
