my speedometer doesn't work again... i hear a weird sound now that wasn't there before , could this be the speedo cable at the transmission that is loose?

and what is the best way toi change it myself?

On my 75, I "had" cruise control that was not factory. I would like to meet whoever it was that put it on.:grinshot There were like 3 cables hooked up to this thing. Two from the tranny to the cruise thingy and one from the cruise to the speedo. The speedo would work from time to time with a funny noise. Come to find out, the cable going to the speedo didn't seat properly. The square cable was protruding too far out and wouldn't allow the cable to "snap" into the speedo.

Removed cruise, got one cable from tranny to speedo (the right one) and trouble cleared.

They are pretty easy to replace. The tranny end just unscews. Yoy may need water pump pliers to get it off but not to put it on. The speedo end is a bit more involved but not too bad. Just remove the duct that is below the speedo and you can get a hand on the back of the speedo. Feel around the connection and you'll figure out how to release the clip that holds it in. Don't worry, the clip stays in place on the speedo so you can't lose it.

First thing I would do is check for secure connection at both ends of the cable. Next thing I would do is lube the cable. I know I've seen an adapter in one of the vette catalogs that allows for easy lubrication of the cable. The connection at the speedo requires that you depress the clip behind the speedo gauge. You have to press down on the clip while pulling on the cable at the same time. Does not sound hard until you realize you can't get both hands up there. I've become quite adept at this only because i've removed the cable many times.
