Yesterday I noticed that my speedometer in my '65 will not go above 35 mph. The odometer se4ems to work properly. Before I do something dumb, can anyone suggest how to approach this problem? Since there is just one drive cable, I can't think of what may be wrong.

:confused

Does the needle vibrate, or does it just get to 35 and stop moving? Does it work normally below 35?

The needle does not seem to vibrate. It just stops at about 35. Below 35 it is difficult to know if it is normal, but it also seems to not go below about 10-15 mph until the car completely stops. And the odometer seems to be workng normally although I have not checked it against anything. Is it something unconnected to the drive cable, like something within the mechanism unconnected to the odometer? I think this may get expensive? :W :confused

Marlar,
i have a similar issue. Needle will not go below 10 and between 10 and 75 MPH it really doesn't work. I'm I'm above 75 it works for short periods of time. My odo works - even the trip odometer! Your speedo needs a rebuild.

Any experience with an outfit who does rebuilds?

:ugh ;help

I don't have any personal experience with this guy but every review I've read has been very positive. I'm not sure if he participates in this forum. When I get around to it, my speedo will be going to him for rebuild. My NOS tach will be going to him for calibration too.

It sounds like you needle is slipping on it's post. You can probably just push it back on tight (gently) after you take out the speedo. I'd check that out before I had it rebuilt. Rebuilds aren't cheap, and you may not need one.

Thanks for the tip. I assume I have to pull the main panel and then remove the speedometer, then somehow get the glass face off?

Yes, you have to pull the instrument cluster to get it out, but the glass will stay in the cluster, and the speedo will come out without the glass. Since it will have to come out to be rebuilt anyway, I'd check the needle before I sent it off. Pulling the cluster out is no fun, but after you get it out the first time, putting it back and (should the need arise) pulling it again, won't seem nearly as hard. I've done mine several times (replacing the gauges) and now I don't mind it, besides I thought you Georgia boys could do anything. Up here in N.C., we just glide through this stuff.
