If I change the speedometer in my 82 with a 140 MPH Pace Car Speedometer will I have to change the gear in the Trans. to make it work properly?
Has any one ever had any problems with Ecklers conversion service? I sent my 85 MPH off for 165 MPH conversion on Nov. 20th and havnt herd from them . I realise this is the Holiday season and they are probably very buisy but my patients are running low so I am going to put this 1978 140 MPH speedo in my 1982 for now if it will work .
Will I have to change the gear for the 140 MPH speedo to work properly?
Will I have to get a different gear for the 165 MPH speedo or do Ecklers do all of there calibrations at the speedo?

the speedo is only reading the rpm of the cable .the gears in the trans are only to give the correct reading in relation to the rear gear set being 3:54 ,373 or what ever else may be back there . it has no bearing on the top speed reading of the speedo . only my 2 cents steve

I replaced the the 1982 85 MPH speedo with the 140MPH one from the 1978 Pace car and it reads 10 MPH to fast .
Does anyone no why this is ?
And how to fix it?

The difference is most likely due to different gear rato. Also most 78s have a gear adapter that attaches between the trans and the speedo cable. I don't remember if the 80-82s have that. I'm not sure, but just some things to check into.

The calibration is in the speedo unit itself...If you upgrade you shouldn't need anything else.
The service provided by Ecklers is a good shop that does the work.(I can personally say this I know them very well)
If you have a speedo thats 10mph off something went wrong on the unit...unless you have changed or modified something on your car(tires) ....email me if you have any questions.

I have seen those gear adapters i do not know what the exact purpose is. but do believe it has to do with ratio modification .if they do not have speedo gears to make the proper cable speeds steve

My car, which is far from original, has some type of adapter on it. To this day I don't know what its for. I took the car to the local chevy dealer, and they could not give me an answer. I have a cable coming from the tranny to this little metal box. Then another cable from this box to the speedo. I have not done any further investigation into the purpose of this adapter but would love to know its purpose.

I purchased a 140mph speedometer from Redline Gauges for $60.00. To date is has worked very well. When someone asks me how fast my vette is I just tell them to look at the speedometer;)

Name / Location / Link to Speedomoter Vendor ?

Hi DB !!

Can you post some contact info for your speedo upgrade ? Can you provide an estimate of the cost ? Have you received it yet ? were you satisfied ? thanx ! John :cool

For anyone tired of looking at their 85 mph, just follow the link in GerryLP's post. Redline is a great outfit with quick turnaraound and great work. Also, if you have a Canadian sold Corvette and would prefer to look at a MPH speedometer, they can help you there too.

Speedometer Change

After an 8 week 3 day waiting period I finally recieved my 165 MPH Speedo Conversion from Ecklers and found out why they take so long.
It takes two to four weeks for them to process (four weeks in my case) the order then once they process the order they send it out to an outside shop called
Corvette Clocks By Roger , corvetteclocks.com who according to my Invoice dates has a very quick turn around time back to Ecklers. So then it takes them another week or so to reprocess the order and send it back to me.
Ecklers charged me 197.40 after shpg & hndg packaging and sales tax charges.
According to Corvette Clocks web site they charge around $85.00 plus fees.
I am not mad at Ecklers and I definatly understand that every body has to make money and there charge is fair when you figure in the fees and expenses they incur to send it out. I will also continue to do buisness with them from time to time.
I am just letting everyone know that they can save alot of time and money by dealing directly with Corvette Clocks, they did an excellent job on my conversion that looks and works great.
If any of you from Corvette clocks read this, thanks for the excellent conversion.

Is this little metal box mounted in front of and below the brake master cylinder on the innner fender? Does it have a couple of wires running to it? If it does this is a transducer; if it dies so will you speedometer, on a 1978 it also plays a part in the cruise control working.
