I can't drive my 72 Vette at night because half my speedometer is blacked out. One of the bulbs in the gauge is burned out. How would I go about replacing the bulb in the speedometer? HELP!

Assuming you have the same dash setup as a 76, the first thing you need to do is get access to the back side of the speedo. The drivers side dash piece seems to me to be impossible to remove, but you might be able to get it loose enough to give you access. Otherwise your best bet is to remove the center bezel and some of the duct work behind it. When you get to the speedo, you'll see 4 (I think, maybe 5) wires attached to round plastic plugs attached to the back. Just give each a tug and the plug with bulb attached should pop right out. Push in the bulb slightly and twist, and the bulb will come right out. Good luck. :)

I have the same trouble with my speedo. The left half of the speedo is dark. Mine was an easy fix though. I just drive faster :D

Hey L88, some of these lights bulbs are a bear to get to. Be careful when pulling them out you don't pull the wire out of the bulb fixture. On my '74 they are held in the back of the dash by a spring type fastener built on the fixture. Also they are single wire type that rely on their ground from the contact of the spring type fastener to the medal and from other wires running from the back of the dash. Make sure there is no corrosion on the fixture before putting them back in. Taking out the drivers side dash is time comsuming but not really that hard. Not something I would do just for a dash light. A mirror helps. Good luck. peace Bud

you should be able to reach up in behind and reach them.although you may want to contact a yogi first,
seriously, just reach up behind the speedometer and pull out the entire socket.the dash bulbs have a grey wire, if you pull one with another color, make sure it goes back where it belongs(left signal)the grey ones can go back in any grey socket.
If the bulbs are good don't worry, check the contact on the bottom of the bulb, and socket, make sure you clean the tip of the bulb.almost none of mine worked, but all but 2 were good.just needed cleaning.you may as well fix the bulbs in the console, some of them are probably burned too.mike
p.s. if you take the bulb to the autostore and don't say corvette, they're only about 40 cents each.

L88, if you have a problem getting your hand behind the speedo you may consider taking the dash pad(top) off. it allows some access plus looking thru the windshield you can see what you're reaching for.
