Yesterday i took the vette out and the speedometer quit working again. as some of you know i have changed the cables.tranducer and this should not happen. anyone got any suggestions.
can you buy a straight cable that goes from the speedo to the transmission?

Yup. Just ask for a cable that fits a car w/o cruise. That is what I eventually did with my 75.

My 80 L-82 corvette with cruise control used to "eat" speedo cables. Until I could determine why, I went to a cable that ran straight to the speedometer from the transmission as mentioned above. No problems after that. Later I went back to the original two cable cruise control/transducer setup and had no problems AFTER being told that I should lubricate both cables on a very regular basis. That solved the problem for me.

Thanks first for all the advice about the staight cable.. i lubed both cables and it didn't seem to make much of a difference. yesterday after Reserve Duty i disconnected both cables and tried to see if the cables would slide out, no luck .so i assume the cables are still okay. my questions now would be...

1. how do you know when the speedometer is going bad

2. is there suppose to be s plastic tip on the top cable going into the transducer ?

Sorry, I do not know the answer to your two questions--I am sure someone does. I do know that the speedometer is very easy to replace on a 80 model. I recall doing it. If removed, I am sure that a local speedometer shop could test the head for you so. (I would call a shop first before removing it).

I do not have a 80 speedometer head from my old car or I would send it to you.

I do have a very rare 80 L-82 6000 redline rpm tach that I am about to post for sale.

BTW: You and I have the same date of birth--figure the odds on that.

George Black...
Cool we have the same birth date. what would be weirder though is if we were both born in 1956..

I have a similar problem. I did replace cruise cable with a non cruise type and it worked for 17.4 miles. (i checked speedo)
I was told that there is a cotter pin of some type in the transmission that rarely gets put back if you are serviced.
this holds the cable to the tranny gear. I have not checked it yet
but plan to soon

Yours may have popped off the back of speedo itself?

Where do you buy the speedo cable that goes from the speedometer to the transmission ?

Are you sure the clip that holds the driven gear to the output shaft on the trans.didnt break or fall out. Had this happen on mine about 2 yrs ago.

clip

clip that holds the driven gear to the output shaft on the trans? Can i see the clip from underneath or do i have to take something apart?

You have to pull the tail shaft housing to get to it not hard,4bolts and a little fluid. Just wish I had checked it first, would have saved me alot of wasted time trying to figure out why every time i hooked up the cable it might work for a little while then quit. Keep saying it couldnt be that,it was! let me know if you need more help.
